In this edition of Railways Africa Magazine\u2019s \u201cCoffee with the Editor,\u201d filmed at the recent Land-Linked Zambia 2024 event, we speak with Raymond Shoniwa, the General Manager of Beitbridge Bulawayo Railway (BBR).<\/p>\n

Raymond discusses some of the major breakthroughs, including the recent acquisition of three new locomotives and 150 wagons, which are being used for the recently concluded open access agreement with the National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ). With fluctuations in lithium prices, BBR\u2019s scope has broadened and the company is now transporting a diverse range of commodities including chrome, copper and clinker, however, the focus is on supporting mining activities in Zimbabwe.<\/p>\n

Raymond points out that given the ongoing drought, it is unlikely that the Zimbabwean government will allocate funds for new infrastructure projects, with most resources redirected towards drought relief. The participation of the private sector brings in the rolling stock that operators like NRZ need to continue their operations effectively.<\/p>\n

Regarding the current Beitbridge Bulawayo Railway concession, Raymond feels encouraged about their operational successes and the prospects for extending their impact beyond 2029. He also highlights the potential for increased trade between the DRC and Zambia, emphasizing the significant role that rail could play in supporting the booming copper industry in these regions. This is a major opportunity for rail to expand its capacity and meet the rising demands of mineral transportation.<\/p>\n

We also discuss open access fee structures, and finding the balance between the state of the railway infrastructure.<\/p>\n

Raymond\u2019s insights reveal a clear vision for BBR\u2019s future, and indeed the region\u2019s railways, focusing on leveraging private sector partnerships and broadening their operational scope to seize new opportunities in a challenging economic landscape.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Swala Rail Solutions’ Vision

In this episode of Railways Africa Magazine\u2019s \u201cCoffee with the Editor,\u201d filmed at the recent Land-Linked Zambia 2024 event, we sit down with Sifiso Ndhlukula, Managing Director of Swala Logistics. Sifiso discusses the establishment of Swala Rail Solutions, a commercial company registered in the DRC in 2022, with the aim of operating rail services between the DRC and Zambia. The company has procured four locomotives and 120 wagons from South Africa, with two locomotives and 60 wagons already in operation between DRC and Ndola.<\/p>\n

Regarding tonnages, each train can carry up to 1,000 tonnes, although operational constraints limit the load to around 750 tonnes per trip, with 3-4 trips per month. Sifiso highlights the importance of track conditions in determining the number of trains that can operate efficiently, considering the presence of multiple private players on the same line.<\/p>\n

Sifiso underscores the need for collective collaboration with the network owner, SNCC, to address track maintenance, increased derailments, and speed restrictions. As private operators, they have access to funding sources and can play a vital role in supporting track improvements. However, the specifics of funding contributions and requirements are still being discussed internally. Overall, Sifiso\u2019s insights shed light on the opportunities and challenges facing rail transport in the region, emphasizing the importance of collaboration and investment in infrastructure to unlock its full potential.<\/p>\n

Despite the challenges posed by the region\u2019s rail infrastructure, Sifiso remains optimistic about the potential for rail transport and has no regrets about the investment he has made in the rail sector. Looking ahead, Sifiso is currently in discussions with Zambia Railways and the Zambian Ministry of Transport. He intends to invest in additional rolling stock to transport commodities from Ndola to other ports, reflecting Swala Rail Solutions\u2019 commitment to investing in the region and establishing the business as an entity in Zambia.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
