{"id":27264,"date":"2024-04-13T06:48:17","date_gmt":"2024-04-12T20:48:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/?guid=d9ffc87a437c3a416ad78b21d039a4b2"},"modified":"2024-04-13T06:48:17","modified_gmt":"2024-04-12T20:48:17","slug":"grand-public-transport-plan-for-whanganui","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/?p=27264","title":{"rendered":"Grand public transport plan for Whanganui"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A new chapter could be written in\u00a0Whanganui\u2019s\u00a0public transport history but community support is needed to get it started.<\/p>\n<p>Horizons Regional Council\u2019s\u00a0draft 10-year plan for 2024-34 has earmarked $1 million for an urban bus service over the next three years &#8211; enough to bring a high-frequency, high-ridership service to the city.<\/p>\n<p>Anthonie Tonnon,\u00a0Whanganui District Council\u2019s\u00a0representative to the Horizons Regional Council passenger transport committee, said in the late 1970s there were 800,000 trips a year on the Greyhound buses service.<\/p>\n<p>The Greyhound buses took over from Whanganui\u2019s tram service that ran from 1908 to 1950, which operated a coverage route system &#8211; where buses ran every two hours but went \u201cdown every other street\u201d.  Fast forward to 2022 and the city racked up only 90,000 bus trips. \\<br \/>\n \\<br \/>\nWhanganui recently &#8216;The Tide&#8217; frequent bus services.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A new chapter could be written in\u00a0Whanganui\u2019s\u00a0public transport history but community support is needed to get it started.
