The completion of an ambitious light rail scheme touted by the Queensland<\/a> government as a key Olympic<\/a> legacy project is at risk amid a massive cost blowout.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The state government released the full business case this afternoon after 9News revealed the plans had been completed last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The business case estimated the Gold Coast light rail would cost more than $7 billion.<\/p>\n\n\n

The revelation comes just weeks after Premier Steven Miles scrapped a $2.7 billion scheme to rebuild the Gabba<\/a>, \ufeffsaying the cost was too much in the midst of a cost of living crisis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It comes after 9News revealed stage four of the project – a 13-kilometre section of light rail linking Coolangatta to Burleigh – would cost more than $3 billion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Queensland’s Transport Minister Bart Mellish \ufeffhas admitted the scheme is projected to cost anywhere from $3.1 billion to $7.5 billion.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
