These are the last of six TBMs being used for tunnelling on the 24-kilometre <a href=\"https:\/\/www.railexpress.com.au\/sydney-metro-west-the-bays-project-ramps-up\/\">Sydney Metro West line<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"block--field-body block\" data-block-plugin-id=\"field_block:node:news:body\">\n<div class=\"field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item\">\n<p>The TBMs arrived in 32 pieces by ship (16 for each TBM) at White Bay port last month. They are currently inside the 34-metre-deep station box at The Bays being assembled ahead of their launch later this year.<\/p>\n<p>Both 1,100 tonne machines will journey parallel to the iconic Anzac Bridge, heading to the new Pyrmont Station site, and then under Darling Harbour before reaching the Hunter Street Station site in the heart of the CBD.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_115876\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-115876\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.railexpress.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/240319_TBM-Front-Shield_037.jpeg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-115876\" src=\"https:\/\/www.railexpress.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/240319_TBM-Front-Shield_037-300x169.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.railexpress.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/240319_TBM-Front-Shield_037-300x169.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.railexpress.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/240319_TBM-Front-Shield_037-768x432.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/www.railexpress.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/240319_TBM-Front-Shield_037.jpeg 889w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-115876\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Image\/Transport for NSW<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>These mixed shield (slurry) TBMs are specifically designed to excavate through sandstone and under the harbour.
