Cells have adapted for a wide variety of settings and functions. Nerve cells in humans and animals, for example, have long, thin extensions that rapidly transmit signals, while rigid, blocky cells support the structure of plants.<\/p>\n<p>Cell biology is the study of cell structure, function, and behavior. An earlier investigation, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/mission\/station\/research-explorer\/investigation\/?#id=7485\">STaARS Bioscience-3<\/a>, examined the mechanisms behind these changes at the cellular and genetic level. The research <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41526-024-00380-w\" rel=\"noopener\">revealed <\/a>that, after only three days of spaceflight, there were changes in the expression of more than 11,000 genes in blood vessel cells that could alter their functions. The results laid the groundwork for additional research into cell response to spaceflight that could help protect the health of crew members on future missions and people with cardiovascular diseases on Earth.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Neural cells<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/mission\/station\/research-explorer\/investigation\/?#id=7503\">STaARS BioScience-4<\/a> examined microgravity\u2019s effects on neural stem cells that give rise to central nervous system cells. Researchers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdpi.com\/2306-5354\/11\/1\/11\" rel=\"noopener\">found<\/a> changes in production and consumption of energy and increased breakdown of cellular components in these cells, responses that likely enhance adaptation to microgravity. The JAXA <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/mission\/station\/research-explorer\/investigation\/?#id=766\">Fish Scales<\/a> investigation analyzed goldfish scales exposed to three times Earth\u2019s gravity, simulated microgravity, and microgravity on orbit. Researchers <a href=\"https:\/\/bioone.org\/journals\/zoological-science\/volume-39\/issue-4\/zs210107\/Osteoclastic-and-Osteoblastic-Responses-to-Hypergravity-and-Microgravity--Analysis\/10.2108\/zs210107.full\" rel=\"noopener\">determined <\/a>that goldfish scales can be used as a model to help them understand how human bones respond to spaceflight.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mouse cells<\/h2>\n<p>Research with model organisms like rodents has relevance to humans in space and makes significant contributions to understanding human aging, disease, and the effects of microgravity on biological and physical processes. JAXA\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/mission\/station\/research-explorer\/investigation\/?#id=871\">Stem Cells<\/a> studied how spaceflight affected the DNA and chromosomes of embryonic mouse stem cells, and their ability to develop into adult mice after return to Earth.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers analyzed unaltered cells and cells given a mutation to increase responsiveness to radiation. They <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S2405844022015547?via%3Dihub\" rel=\"noopener\">found <\/a>no chromosomal differences between the unaltered space-flown cells and ground controls, but the mutated cells had more DNA abnormalities. Analysis <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdpi.com\/2218-273X\/13\/2\/371\" rel=\"noopener\">showed <\/a>that the heart can adapt to the stress of spaceflight in just 30 days.
