{"id":259782,"date":"2025-07-31T18:36:40","date_gmt":"2025-07-31T08:36:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/railuk.com\/?p=180687"},"modified":"2025-07-31T18:36:40","modified_gmt":"2025-07-31T08:36:40","slug":"surveys-result-in-closure-of-railway-between-whitehaven-and-corkicle","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/?p=259782","title":{"rendered":"Surveys result in closure of railway between Whitehaven and Corkicle"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/railuk.com\/infrastructure\/surveys-result-in-closure-of-railway-between-whitehaven-and-corkicle\/\" title=\"Surveys result in closure of railway between Whitehaven and Corkicle\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"485\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.railuk.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/31093521\/nwr-whitehaven-485x360.jpg\" class=\"webfeedsFeaturedVisual wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" style=\"display: block; margin-bottom: 5px; clear:both;max-width: 100%;\" link_thumbnail=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.railuk.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/31093521\/nwr-whitehaven-485x360.jpg 485w, https:\/\/cdn.railuk.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/31093521\/nwr-whitehaven-80x60.jpg 80w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 485px) 100vw, 485px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Cumbrian Coast Line passengers are being advised the railway between Whitehaven and Corkicle will remain closed after recent surveys.<\/p>\n<p>Network Rail has been&nbsp;working&nbsp;inside Bransty Tunnel for the last five days carrying out assessments ahead of a full track and drainage renewal in August and September.<\/p>\n<p>It involved doing tests to assess any weight limits needed for the heavy plant and machinery needed for the planned&nbsp;renewals.<\/p>\n<p>However, those tests have uncovered some areas under the railway which need strengthening before any work can progress.<\/p>\n<p>Specialist&nbsp;engineering&nbsp;teams are now planning exactly how to carry out the extra ground strengthening work.<\/p>\n<p>After assessing the initial survey data&nbsp;by&nbsp;specialist&nbsp;expert&nbsp;engineers, Network Rail has closed Bransty Tunnel to all trains until further notice.<\/p>\n<p>Rail replacement buses will continue to keep passengers on the move between\u00a0Workington and Sellafield,*\u00a0with people advised to check\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nationalrail.co.uk\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">www.nationalrail.co.uk<\/a>\u00a0for the latest travel information.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Darren Miller, Network Rail\u2019s North West route infrastructure director, said:&nbsp;<\/strong>\u201cWe\u2019re sorry to passengers impacted by this unexpected&nbsp;longer&nbsp;closure of the railway between Whitehaven and Corkicle. The&nbsp;preparatory&nbsp;surveys have revealed previously unknown ground conditions which we need to investigate further so we can carry out repairs and get the line reopened as soon as possible.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re working closely with train operator Northern and our freight customers on alternative routes and rail replacement bus services.
