KENYA has agreed a $US 138.7m loan from France to modernise Nairobi\u2019s five-line metre-gauge commuter rail network. The deal was signed on April 6 during a visit to the Kenyan capital by Mr St\u00e9phane S\u00e9journ\u00e9, French minister for Europe and foreign affairs.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis project aligns with Kenya’s sustainable urban development initiatives,\u201d says Mr Musalia Mudavadi, cabinet secretary for foreign and diaspora affairs, \u201caiming to enhance transport services and mobility in the Nairobi metropolitan area.\u201d<\/p>\n
At the end of last year, work started on a $US 7.76m new 12.5km metre-gauge line in west Nairobi, connecting Riruta with Ngong. When complete, the Nairobi commuter network will total 165km.<\/p>\n
