{"id":25776,"date":"2024-04-08T12:37:39","date_gmt":"2024-04-08T02:37:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/?p=25776"},"modified":"2024-04-08T12:37:39","modified_gmt":"2024-04-08T02:37:39","slug":"northern-issues-ticket-warning-ahead-of-grand-national","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/?p=25776","title":{"rendered":"Northern issues ticket warning ahead of Grand National"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.northernrailway.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Northern<\/a> is urging racegoers bound for the Grand National at Aintree this week (11 \u2013 13 April 2024) \u201cnot to gamble on travelling\u201d without a ticket.<\/p>\n<p>The train operator warned that revenue protection officers will be deployed at key stations ahead of the event.<\/p>\n<p>Anyone caught without a valid ticket or \u2018promise to pay\u2019 notice may be issued with a \u00a3100 penalty fare, which is reduced to \u00a350 if paid within 21 days.<\/p>\n<p>Mark Powles, commercial and customer director at Northern, commented: \u201cWe know from experience that all major events encourage some people to think they\u2019ll get away with not buying a ticket for their journey.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy publicising this clampdown in advance, we hope less people will \u2018chance it\u2019 and end up \u00a3100 down before they even get to the racecourse.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Services in and around Liverpool are expected to be busy over the three-day event and people are encouraged to allow extra time for their journey.<\/p>\n<p>For assistance, please speak to a member of station staff or contact Passenger Assist on 0800 138 5560.<\/p>\n<p>In January, Northern announced a 20% drop in the number of penalty fares issued in the first year since the government increased the fine to \u00a3100.<\/p>\n<p>Money raised through penalty fares issued by Northern is, in-line with other revenue income streams, re-invested in the rail industry to improve the service offered to all customers.<\/p>\n<p>Northern has invested in the largest network of digital ticket infrastructure of any train operator in the country, making it easier than ever to buy a ticket via their app, website, one of more than 600 ticket machines across the network and ticket offices too.<\/p>\n<p>Fare evaders are prosecuted under the provisions of the Regulation of Railways Act 1889 and the Railway Byelaws made pursuant to the Transport Act 2000.
