The United National Transport Union (UNTU) has announced that it firmly supports the recent call made by Parliament\u2019s Standing Committee on Public Accounts (SCOPA) regarding the former Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA) Board.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe echo SCOPA\u2019s demand for accountability from the former Board, which is responsible for the ill-fated decision to cancel the security contracts which resulted in the widespread destruction of the country\u2019s key rail passenger lines. We emphasize that accountability shouldn\u2019t stop with the Board alone. Former Minister of Transport, Fikile Mbalula, must be equally held responsible for the decision made during the challenging times of the COVID-19 pandemic. Cancelling security contracts without viable alternatives in place left the lives of passengers, key infrastructure, and the lifeline of our economy vulnerable, a decision we have said cannot go unchallenged. The termination of these contracts without adequate backup security measures left crucial rail lines unprotected, resulting in rampant theft, vandalism, and illegal occupation, particularly along the Metrorail Central line in Cape Town.\u201d<\/p>\n

UNTU fully supports SCOPA\u2019s stance that PRASA must pursue delinquency declarations against the former board members, considering the significant financial losses incurred by this decision, amounting to billions of rands.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

The Ministry of Planning and Economic Development has announced the commencement of publishing a series of reports reviewing the Citizen Investment Plan for all Egyptian governorates for the fifth consecutive year. This initiative aims to raise awareness among citizens regarding the directions and priorities of the sustainable development plan for the fiscal year 23\/2024 and its role in achieving Egypt\u2019s Vision 2030.<\/p>\n

The report outlines the plan\u2019s focus on implementing 121 developmental projects in the housing services sector in Giza Governorate. Key targets in this sector include directing approximately 2.7 billion pounds towards drinking water and sanitation services, implementing 55 projects in higher education, including equipping existing educational facilities at Cairo University and executing 9 projects in the transportation sector, such as rehabilitating the subway\u2019s second line and establishing the railway complex in Bashitil.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Following the Sustainable Infrastructure Development Symposium in South Africa in March 2024, it was announced that Infrastructure South Africa will be supporting the proposed Project Ukuvuzelela. This initiative is focused on developing a high-capacity rail corridor to enhance automotive volumes, as detailed in the RFP: TCC\/2023\/05\/0001\/28813\/RFP titled \u2018UKUVUSELELA AUTOMOTIVE PROJECT: GAUTENG \u2013 EASTERN CAPE HIGH-CAPACITY RAIL CORRIDOR FOR AUTOMOTIVE VOLUMES FROM PRETORIA TO THE PORT OF PORT ELIZABETH\u2019. This RFP, issued by Transnet Group around May last year, involves a Turnkey EPC\u2014Engineering, Design, Procurement, Construction and Commissioning process, and is currently under evaluation.<\/p>\n

The goal of the project is to enhance the automotive industry\u2019s capacity for exporting units globally. With the Durban Port facing increased congestion, the Port of Port Elizabeth has been chosen as an optimal alternative. The project plans include modifications at the Waltoo and Kaalfontein Yards, terminal upgrades at the Port of PE, and extending passing loops along the SouthCor railway route to accommodate 50-wagon trains. These updates are essential for boosting the annual transportation of Fully Built Units by 2026.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

\n\t\t\t\t\t\tTanzania Railways Corporation (TRC) has officially announced the arrival of the first set of modern Electric Multiple Unit (EMU) trains at the Port of Dar es Salaam. This significant milestone occurred on April 3, 2024, marking a crucial phase in Tanzania\u2019s rail transport modernization efforts.\n

The first shipment includes five electric locomotives and three passenger carriages, part of a larger procurement of ten sets from South Korean manufacturer Hyundai Rotem. Each EMU set is capable of carrying 589 passengers and achieving speeds of up to 160km per hour. These state-of-the-art units are equipped with modern passenger amenities including Wi-Fi, specialized seating for those with additional needs, advanced air conditioning systems, and comprehensive security measures such as CCTV.\t\t\t\t\t<\/p><\/div>\n
