{"id":25684,"date":"2024-04-08T15:33:51","date_gmt":"2024-04-08T05:33:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/?p=25684"},"modified":"2024-04-08T15:34:00","modified_gmt":"2024-04-08T05:34:00","slug":"byron-shire-rail-trail","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/?p=25684","title":{"rendered":"Byron Shire Rail Trail"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The Northern Rivers Rail Trail is being constructed in stages across four Local Government Areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the Byron Shire we are:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Moving forward with planning and approvals for the rail trail from Mullumbimby to Crabbes Creek, and the old Byron Bay station through Bangalow to Booyong.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Exploring funding opportunities to reactivate the Byron Shire rail corridor.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Planning and approvals to implement the rail trail<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The decision to move forward with planning and approvals to implement the rail trail came at the 24 August 2023 meeting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Council also resolved to seek a lease over as much of the corridor as possible to help:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Ensure the corridor remains in public hands.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Enable investigation of options for diverse housing within the corridor.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Enable the activation of unused space, infrastructure and buildings for community use.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Allow council to receive income for trail maintenance.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Allow environmental rehabilitation, including wildlife corridors.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Other options for public transport.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Council reiterates ongoing support for multi-use of the rail corridor between Byron Bay and Mullumbimby.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>See&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.byron.nsw.gov.au\/Council\/Meetings-Agendas\/Minutes-Agendas\">24 August Council Meeting Minutes<\/a>&nbsp;for more information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Feasibility study<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The decision compliments a feasibility study for the 63 kms section between Yelgun and Eltham being undertaken by the Northern Rivers Joint Organisation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Northern Rivers Joint Organisation received $481,115 from the Regional NSW \u2013 Business Case and Strategy Development Fund to conduct this study.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Funding<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We have been working with Transport for NSW (TfNSW) and Department of Regional NSW to identify funding opportunities to develop the Byron Shire rail corridor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In November 2022, we were granted access by TfNSW to undertake essential vegetation management between Byron Bay and Mullumbimby. This will enable a detailed engineering assessment of the existing rail infrastructure.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We are seeking funding from both State and Federal Government for these activities.&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Northern Rivers Rail Trail is being constructed in stages across four Local Government Areas.
