{"id":255597,"date":"2025-07-23T20:46:00","date_gmt":"2025-07-23T10:46:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/railuk.com\/?p=180235"},"modified":"2025-07-23T20:46:00","modified_gmt":"2025-07-23T10:46:00","slug":"tfw-annual-report-rail-journeys-up-rail-revenue-up-and-brand-new-trains-transforming-wales-and-borders","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/?p=255597","title":{"rendered":"TfW Annual Report \u2013 Rail journeys up, rail revenue up and brand-new trains transforming Wales and Borders"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/railuk.com\/rail-news\/tfw-annual-report-rail-journeys-up-rail-revenue-up-and-brand-new-trains-transforming-wales-and-borders\/\" title=\"TfW Annual Report &#8211; Rail journeys up, rail revenue up and brand-new trains transforming Wales and Borders\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"485\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.railuk.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/23111228\/tfw2-485x360.jpg\" class=\"webfeedsFeaturedVisual wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" style=\"display: block; margin-bottom: 5px; clear:both;max-width: 100%;\" link_thumbnail=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.railuk.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/23111228\/tfw2-485x360.jpg 485w, https:\/\/cdn.railuk.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/23111228\/tfw2-80x60.jpg 80w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 485px) 100vw, 485px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Transport for Wales has published their 2024\/25 Annual Report and figures reveal that more people are using the rail network and positively impacting revenue figures for the not-for-profit organisation.<\/p>\n<p>Key figures from the report include:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>31.7 million train journeys made by customers \u2013 up a fifth from last year;<\/li>\n<li>17.8% increase in rail revenue to \u00a3174.8 million;<\/li>\n<li>77.1% of journeys made on new trains as of 24 May 2025;<\/li>\n<li>1.2 million journeys on TrawsCymru bus contracts that TfW run \u2013 11.4% increase on last year;<\/li>\n<li>\u00a347 million of Active Travel funding distributed.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>TfW has been on a transformational journey since they took over the Wales and Borders rail franchise in 2018, and this includes a \u00a3800 million investment into brand-new trains and over \u00a31 billion investment into the South Wales Metro.<\/p>\n<p>Electrification of the Treherbert, Aberdare and Merthyr lines has been completed this year, with new trains now providing an improved service to customers.<\/p>\n<p>Since 2020, TfW has laid over 120km of overhead cables and 70km of high voltage cable as they continue to deliver the South Wales Metro project.<\/p>\n<p>In November (2024), they became the first heavy rail train operator outside of London and the South East of England to introduce a new Pay As You Go system at 95 stations throughout South Wales. Within the first three months of it\u2019s introduction, over 150,000 journeys were made using the new technology.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-embed-handler wp-block-embed-embed-handler wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"youtube-embed\" data-video_id=\"5GURSpRzZR4\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Annual Report   ENG\" width=\"696\" height=\"392\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/5GURSpRzZR4?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Cabinet Secretary for Transport and North Wales, Ken Skates said: &#8220;I am delighted with the progress TfW has made in transforming public transport across Wales and delivering an improved customer experience. Passengers are already experiencing benefits with more regular services, new trains, and better value fares.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHowever, there is still an exciting programme of delivery ahead of us including the roll out of bus franchising, the development of Network North Wales, and the completion of South Wales metro. These improvements will help to connect communities, promote economic growth, and support new jobs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>James Price, TfW CEO said: \u201cTfW has continually invested in public transport since we launched publicly in 2018 and we are now really starting to benefit from these investments with 31.7 million rail journeys made between 2024\/25, resulting in a 17.8% increase in our rail revenue to \u00a3174.8 million.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur new trains and the fundamental changes we\u2019ve made to rail timetables to offer more services have allowed us to attract more people to our network.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAcross our TrawsCymru bus network we\u2019ve also seen increases in customers and we\u2019ve been able to adjust our summer timetables to meet seasonal demand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThrough distributing \u00a347 million for Active Travel projects we\u2019ve been able to make it easier for people to walk, wheel or cycle and this is a key part in creating a fully multi-modal public transport network.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Scott Waddington, TfW Chair added: &#8220;As I come to the end of my seven years as Chair of TfW, it is timely to reflect on the enormous progress I have witnessed during my tenure.
