TransPennine Express (TPE) and Network Rail have spent two weeks showing a group of women who have taken a career break how a job in rail could be a good fit for them.<\/p>\n

Through a partnership with Women in Rail, \u2018Never Mind the Gap\u2019 provides training and work placements for women who want to \u2018change track\u2019 after a period away from the workplace.<\/p>\n

Due to maternity, women take more career breaks than men do, and this is one of the main drivers of the persistent gender pay gap. The scheme is designed to support women when they are choosing their next step \u2013 or just want to try something new.<\/p>\n

Over a two-week stint TPE and Network Rail, provided free training to show a small group of women how rewarding working in rail can be.<\/p>\n

Highlights included using a virtual reality simulator at TPE\u2019s depot in Ardwick, to experience what it’s like to be a train driver, touring Manchester Piccadilly with Network Rail to find out what it\u2019s like to work there.<\/p>\n

Participants were also given the chance to see behind the scenes of onboard catering and chat to revenue protection officers. The group as took part in workshops on interview skills and CV writing.<\/p>\n

Nicola Buckley, people director at TransPennine Express, said: \u201cWomen currently make up 24 per cent of our workforce, and we\u2019re committed to increasing that number by continuing to empower and inspire more women to join the rail industry.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere are incredible career paths available in rail, and we\u2019re proud to highlight some of these through our \u2018Never Mind the Gap\u2019 initiative. It\u2019s a fantastic opportunity for women returning to work after a career break or those looking to explore a new direction.<\/p>\n

\u201cGreater representation of women in these roles is essential – it helps ensure our workforce better reflects the diverse communities we serve.\u201d<\/p>\n

Everyone who took part received a certificate which can be added to their CV.<\/p>\n

Amanda McCormick, senior human resources business partner at Network Rail commented: \u201cWe’re dedicated to making our workforce more diverse and reflective of the communities we serve. Currently, women make up around 13% of our route workforce.<\/p>\n

\u201cInitiatives like Never Mind the Gap are so important in enabling women to experience the variety of career opportunities available to them in the rail industry and show that a career in the rail industry is for everyone. It\u2019s been a fantastic to see how much the participants have enjoyed the variety of different placements across Network Rail and TPE.\u201d<\/p>\n
