{"id":243539,"date":"2025-06-29T12:09:18","date_gmt":"2025-06-29T02:09:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/?p=243539"},"modified":"2025-06-29T12:09:18","modified_gmt":"2025-06-29T02:09:18","slug":"missing-tramline-bike-lanes-schools-delays-plague-fishermans-bend-development","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/?p=243539","title":{"rendered":"Missing tramline, bike lanes, schools: Delays plague Fishermans Bend development"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The timeline for developing Fishermans Bend \u2013 a key precinct for building new housing in Melbourne \u2013 has blown out by at least five years, an investigation by the Victorian Auditor-General\u2019s Office having uncovered major planning delays.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theage.com.au\/link\/follow-20170101-p5djsj\">The audit<\/a>&nbsp;has revealed that the state agencies managing development at Australia\u2019s largest urban renewal project are not on track more than a decade after the former industrial area was controversially rezoned by Liberal then-planning minister Matthew Guy.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"584\" height=\"389\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/image-21.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-243540\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/image-21.jpeg 584w, https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/image-21-300x200.jpeg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 584px) 100vw, 584px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Plans for the redevelopment of Fishermans Bend have stalled.&nbsp;CREDIT:&nbsp;JOE ARMAO<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After its election in 2014, the Labor government pledged to \u201cfix\u201d Fishermans Bend and deliver new schools, public transport and walking and cycling links, as well as housing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAgencies are not on track to deliver all projects and outcomes,\u201d the audit found. \u201cDelivery of the framework has been extended by at least five years to 2055.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The audit found many key planning documents are still in the draft stage or yet to be completed six years after a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fishermansbend.vic.gov.au\/__data\/assets\/pdf_file\/0020\/35093\/Fishermans-Bend-Framework.pdf\">2018 masterplan<\/a>&nbsp;for the area that envisaged 80,000 people living on the 480-hectare peninsula by 2050 and the area hosting 80,000 jobs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This included&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theage.com.au\/link\/follow-20170101-p5eyk3\">a mooted tramline<\/a>&nbsp;and a bridge that would connect the CBD to Fishermans Bend by this year which still does not have a full approved business case.
