Northern is inviting members of the public to step behind the scenes at one of Britain’s longest-serving train care facilities with a special charity open day, taking place at Heaton TrainCare Centre in Newcastle on Saturday 20 and Sunday 21 September 2025.<\/p>\n

In September, Heaton Traincare Centre will mark a significant milestone: 150 years since it first opened its doors. The rare opportunity to go behind the scenes will give visitors a glimpse into the inner workings of a depot that keeps hundreds of Northern, TransPennine Express, and LNER trains in top condition.<\/p>\n

The two-day event celebrating the 150th anniversary of the depot promises something for everyone – from rail enthusiasts keen to get up close to the latest rolling stock, to families looking for a unique day out. It comes as part of the programme of activities for Railway 200, the celebration of the 200th anniversary of the modern railway.<\/p>\n

Trains will feature from the Northern, LNER, and TransPennine Express fleets, with guest appearances including the iconic LNER Class A4 steam locomotive, Sir Nigel Gresley, and other heritage trains with historic connections to the depot.<\/p>\n

Visitors will also receive guided tours of the workshops and facilities, and there will be exhibits from local heritage groups, activities, competitions, food and drink stalls, with a selection of rail-themed memorabilia on sale.<\/p>\n

Jason Wade, regional director for Northern’s north east region, said: “We\u2019re incredibly proud of the work that goes on behind the scenes at Heaton and this open day is a great way to showcase it to the community.<\/p>\n

“The team at Heaton are responsible for keeping customers moving across the North East and beyond, and have been doing so reliably for the last 150 years.<\/p>\n

“Whether you\u2019re a lifelong rail enthusiast or just curious about how our trains are kept running, there\u2019ll be something to enjoy for all ages.”<\/p>\n

The event will run across four timed entry slots, with morning and afternoon sessions on both days. Shuttle trains and buses will operate from Newcastle station to the depot.\u200b<\/p>\n

All of the money raised from ticket sales will go to a selection of North East-based charities, and Northern’s network-wide charity partner, Motor Neurone Disease Association (MNDA). More information about the ‘Heaton 150’ event can be found on Northern’s website<\/a>.<\/p>\n
