{"id":240448,"date":"2025-06-23T15:41:41","date_gmt":"2025-06-23T05:41:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/?p=240448"},"modified":"2025-06-23T15:41:42","modified_gmt":"2025-06-23T05:41:42","slug":"freight-victoria-fails-the-state-once-again-latest-saga","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/?p=240448","title":{"rendered":"Freight Victoria fails the state once again latest saga"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A controversial waste-to-energy project proposed for Geelong&#8217;s suburban fringe has direct links to two major Chinese state-owned enterprises, it can be revealed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The waste incinerator is designed to burn through 400,000 tonnes of rubbish annually \u2014 redirecting the trash from landfill and transforming it into energy for the state&#8217;s grid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>400,000 tonnes per annum is over 11,000 truck movements into and out of the facility per year or nearly 50 per day.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>But the proposal has prompted local backlash, with residents concerned the incinerator would be built too close to homes and produce toxic emissions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\" id=\"105443810\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"862\" height=\"575\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/image_2025-06-23_144538562.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-240450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/image_2025-06-23_144538562.png 862w, https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/image_2025-06-23_144538562-300x200.png 300w, https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/image_2025-06-23_144538562-768x512.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 862px) 100vw, 862px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Protesters are concerned about the proximity of the proposed project to homes.&nbsp;(Facebook: Say NO to Lara big incinerator)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Community frustrations also centre around the transparency of who is behind the project, as the facility&#8217;s purported cost balloons from $300 million to $700 million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And while most other Australian waste-to-energy projects have publicised major funding partners, the big bucks behind Lara&#8217;s incinerator are yet to be revealed \u2014 even as Victoria&#8217;s planning minister considers whether to approve the project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is the project?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2023, the Environment Protection Authority (EPA) granted Prospect Hill International a development licence to build a waste-to-energy facility in Lara, about 10km north of Geelong&#8217;s CBD.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The incinerator aims to burn residential, commercial and industrial waste to produce about 35MW of power to be fed into the state&#8217;s grid \u2014 enough, Prospect Hill says, &#8220;to power 50,000 homes&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It would also be built just over 1km from Lara&#8217;s town centre, a few hundred metres from the nearest residential doorstep, and its 80m-tall chimney would become the tallest structure in the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How will the waste get to the incinerator?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The plan is for 400,000 tonnes of waste to enter the lara area with no plan for a rail connection meaning under the process with Freight Vicrtoria and the Department if Transport and Planning, this toxic waste would need to be &#8220;trucked&#8221; to the site making the roads around the area even less safe, causing headaches for local residents and congesting the Geelong to Melbourne highway even more than it is today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Clearly a rail connectiion should be mandated as a component of facility build.
