{"id":238893,"date":"2025-06-20T20:14:16","date_gmt":"2025-06-20T10:14:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.railfreight.com\/?p=63333"},"modified":"2025-06-20T20:14:16","modified_gmt":"2025-06-20T10:14:16","slug":"paris-second-biggest-inland-port-posts-record-traffic-thanks-to-rail-freight","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/?p=238893","title":{"rendered":"Paris\u2019 second biggest inland port posts record traffic thanks to rail freight"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Paris\u2019 second biggest river port, Bonneuil-sur-Marne, has posted record freight traffic thanks to strong growth in rail-borne shipments, which almost doubled, rising from 491,000 tonnes in 2023 to 960,000 tonnes last year.<\/strong><br \/>\n<span id=\"more-63333\"><\/span>The surge in rail freight at Bonneuil compares with river-borne freight traffic, which increased slightly to 1.2 million tonnes. It can be partly attributed to the growing activity of Cin\u00e9rites Transport Logistique (CTL), the freight forwarding arm of French quarry operator Carri\u00e8res de l\u2019Ouest.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, CTL inaugurated a multimodal freight terminal at the inland port, located on a site owned by Haropa Port, a public sector structure that groups the ports of Le Havre, Rouen, and Paris. The facility is connected to the railway network and also has wide-gauge river access.<\/p>\n<p>CTL unveiled plans to transport Carri\u00e8res de l\u2019Ouest aggregates from Voutr\u00e9, near Le Mans, in western France, using five trains per week, thereby reducing road freight traffic volumes by the equivalent of 9,400 trucks annually. Shipments are bound for construction sites in the Greater Paris region. Return journeys carry excavated materials to be used as landfill.<\/p>\n<h2>Expanded connections<\/h2>\n<p>Another company that regularly uses the port\u2019s railhead is Bonneuil Transport Multimodal, which operates two 850-metre trains daily to Avignon and Miramas, via Paris-Valenton.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRail traffic has potential, and the demand is there. Today, we can bring in Italian tiles and send them by train to Le Mans,\u201d Eric Fuchs, director of the Seine upstream branch of Haropa Port, told French media. In 2024, Bonneuil handled 1,441 trains, representing a 17% increase from the previous year.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"readmore\">\n<div class=\"readmore-item\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.railfreight.com\/intermodal\/2025\/04\/18\/ports-rail-firms-and-logistics-players-collaborate-to-drive-french-rail-freight\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.railfreight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/shutterstock_260968448-128x128.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"readmore-thumbnail\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<div class=\"readmore-info\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.railfreight.com\/intermodal\/2025\/04\/18\/ports-rail-firms-and-logistics-players-collaborate-to-drive-french-rail-freight\/\" class=\"readmore-title\">Ports, rail firms and logistics players collaborate to drive French rail freight<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<h2>Gennevilliers link adds weekly container flows<\/h2>\n<p>In a separate development, since earlier this Spring, Carri\u00e8res de l&#8217;Ouest has been operating a new rail freight service between Voutr\u00e9 and Gennevilliers, the French capital&#8217;s biggest river port.<\/p>\n<p>Each week, a train loaded with 50 containers makes the journey, carrying 1,500 tonnes of bulk materials to be used in construction projects.<\/p>\n<p>Once emptied, the containers return to Voutr\u00e9 loaded with site rubble or other types of freight.
