The largest city in Kazakhstan, Almaty, has a new container terminal. Located not far from the Chinese border, it will play a role in the consolidation of freight on various major transportation corridors.<\/strong>
\n<\/span>The terminal, named \u201cZhetysu\u201d, is the result of a cooperative effort between Kazakh Railways (KTZ) subsidiary Kedentransservice and Xi\u2019an Free Trade Port Construction and Operation. Zhetysu will be the largest import hub in Kazakhstan, says KTZ. The terminal will have a yearly capacity of 115,000 TEU.<\/p>\n

Logistics hub<\/h2>\n

\u201cKazakhstan strives to become a full-fledged transport and logistics hub of Central
\nAsia and the Caspian region\u201d, explains Nurlan Zhakupov, CEO of sovereign wealth fund Samruk-Kazyna, the parent company of KTZ.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are confidently moving in this direction and developing logistics along international corridors, implementing large-scale infrastructure projects such as Dry Ports in Khorgos and Xi\u2019an, an international logistics hub in Lianyungang, and the seaports of Kuryk and Aktau. The opening of a new terminal in Almaty is part of the strategy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Earlier in the week, a new container terminal opened on the other side of Kazakhstan. The Caspian port of Aktau<\/strong> grew its freight handling capacity by nearly 70<\/strong>,000 TEU yearly<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
