{"id":23391,"date":"2024-03-29T10:36:46","date_gmt":"2024-03-29T00:36:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/?p=23391"},"modified":"2024-03-29T10:36:46","modified_gmt":"2024-03-29T00:36:46","slug":"50m-boost-to-transform-public-transport-in-cornwall","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/?p=23391","title":{"rendered":"\u00a350m boost to transform public transport in Cornwall"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Public transport links in Cornwall will be transformed thanks to \u00a350 million of government investment to deliver the <a href=\"https:\/\/midcornwallmetro.com\/\">Mid-Cornwall Metro Scheme.\u00a0\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p>In a visit to Newquay Station on Wednesday 27 March, Transport Secretary Mark Harper met with local leaders including St Austell and Newquay MP Steve Double to discuss progress on the major improvement project that will better connect residents to employment, business and education opportunities.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Initial benefits of the scheme will be delivered as early as May next year and once complete in full by the end of 2025, it will offer a new hourly coast-to-coast train service between Cornwall\u2019s largest urban areas \u2013 Newquay, St Austell, Truro and Falmouth.\u202f\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It will bring vital infrastructure enhancements along the Newquay rail line including a second platform at Newquay station and an additional \u201cpassing loop\u201d on the tracks to increase capacity and allow extra services to run. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Passengers travelling along the rail route will also benefit from modern, more convenient digital ticketing, allowing them to simply tap-in and tap-out, knowing they will always pay the best fare without needing to plan ahead or search for the right ticket.<\/p>\n<p>Transport Secretary Mark Harper said:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s very encouraging to see the momentum building behind the <a href=\"https:\/\/midcornwallmetro.com\/\">Mid-Cornwall Metro Scheme<\/a>, an important project that\u2019s part of our plan to improve local transport in Cornwall.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThanks to this government\u2019s investment, passengers in Cornwall will experience a more frequent rail service that\u2019s fit for the future.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The scheme will also encourage walking and cycling by delivering active travel improvements in and around stations including new cycle parking, bike hire options, widened footpaths and better crossing points.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Delivered in partnership between <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cornwall.gov.uk\/\">Cornwall Council,<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gwr.com\/\">Great Western Railway<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.networkrail.co.uk\/\">Network Rail,<\/a> the scheme will double the number of rail services between Newquay and Par, adding an extra 700,000 seats per year for passengers along the route.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Other improvements will include level crossing upgrades and signalling improvements to make rail services more reliable.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gwr.com\/\">GWR<\/a> Business Assurance Director Joe Graham said:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe improvement to Newquay that the <a href=\"https:\/\/midcornwallmetro.com\/\">Mid Cornwall Metro<\/a> will bring will really enhance services, better connecting people with jobs, students with education services, and leisure opportunities for all \u2013 providing valuable support for the community and local economies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe continue to work with our industry partners to ensure we can deliver on these improvements in the future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.networkrail.co.uk\/\">Network Rail\u2019s<\/a> Western Route Director Marcus Jones said:\u00a0\u201cOur recently completed track and signalling upgrade in Devon and Cornwall has unlocked the door to the development of the <a href=\"https:\/\/midcornwallmetro.com\/\">Mid Cornwall Metro,<\/a> which will help more people than ever before travel by train.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot only will the scheme provide coast-to-coast travel with an hourly direct train service connecting Newquay, Par, St Austell, Truro, Penryn and Falmouth, it will also improve safety and accessibility.
