{"id":232084,"date":"2025-06-09T16:55:00","date_gmt":"2025-06-09T06:55:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/?p=232084"},"modified":"2025-06-17T19:19:51","modified_gmt":"2025-06-17T09:19:51","slug":"swan-hill-line-fiasco-kings-birthday-weekend-june-2025","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/?p=232084","title":{"rendered":"Swan Hill Line fiasco Kings Birthday Weekend &#8211; June 2025"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\">I went to enjoy the only line that has fit for purpose trains for Regional Rail Travel<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">On Sunday VN14 shunted in with PH power van attached as I am not surprised as I had feeling something wasn&#8217;t right, as I had the same set the day before!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>As one thing that caught my attention was carriage lights on Saturday whist riding this set down direction to Swan Hill was the carriage main lights flickering at odd intervals!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>WC had issues with bad smell suspected high flow of water fouling the WC area on flushing <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>conductor says it related to water pressure after sharing my concerns to him and he reported it for repairs<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Put icing on the cake we lost the light and air conditioning in the train whist I sat in my carriage as we were waiting for departure on 13:35<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I abruptly stopped what I doing beforehand blurted out a reaction toward it  as I heard a &#8220;Click&#8221; at the time it occurred!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><strong><em>Oye! Lights out!<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">It was promptly soon after rectified by crew.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\">Before Bendigo I whist walking through the carriage to my seat I noticed a passenger getting  up from the seat and whole seat base moved with this person!<\/h6>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In doing so I saw the floor of the carriage and seat frame! <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li> I naturally had  concerns for people safety regarding the state of the seat<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>  I couldn&#8217;t access the conductor so I it put online to V\/line Bendigo\/V\/line for work order to be issue so it could be rectified! <\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">As a concerned train traveller <strong>VN14 in BZN258<\/strong> seat no. 28 seems to be unfastened in your <strong>13:35 Swan Hill up<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/VLine\">@VLine<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/vline_bendigo\">@vline_bendigo<\/a> returning to Southern Cross. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">Please arrange a work order for this if required..<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">Thank you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">Seat cushion unfastened in carriage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">29-28 no&#8230;. Near WC <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><strong>*admittedly I was very tired and the message came out it bit gabbled&#8230;.*<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>On the down the trip very nice pleasant run to Swan Hill in my carriage the tell tale features of it&#8217;s era the exposed blind track where the blind used to be in the carriage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\">Arrived Swan Hill on time.<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">On the return things noticed a few odd events took  after returning from a nice lunch for the return service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Notice the seat 29 in BZN258 was not rectified the day before and when station staff was advised  of this was very concerned and surprised it wasn&#8217;t rectified the day before!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Apparently the locomotive N452 had issues  and fitters from Bendigo was coming to rectify it.  As the driver couldn&#8217;t rectify it as he didn&#8217;t have the special tools for it.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Later was advised it was minor &#8220;Fuel Leak&#8221;.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>But was I aware that any fuel leaks are no laughing matter and big safety concerns could compounded issues<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fitters was delayed on arrival and at first the station staff\/crew was aiming to have rectified  on the spot and late departure back via train. \n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Fitters was no show at Swan Hill as the station staff and few  gave half hour before departure for their arrival from Bendigo Railway Workshops who oversees maintenance of Locomotives and trains overseen by 3rd party contractor. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Two coach ordered for the transfer on stand by <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\"><strong>As result the Train Service was cancelled<\/strong>.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed aligncenter is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">The 16:36 Swan Hill &#8211; Southern Cross service will not run today.<br>More information at <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/MJNRgC0bxC\">https:\/\/t.co\/MJNRgC0bxC<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/0BgKoWBSfw\">pic.twitter.com\/0BgKoWBSfw<\/a><\/p>&mdash; V\/Line Bendigo Line (@vline_bendigo) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/vline_bendigo\/status\/1931600127753416986?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 8, 2025<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\">Two Buses were arranged for passengers one Express to Melb and one stopping all stops<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">The people who got off the Mildura coach I don&#8217;t think they were impressed as they some without meals on the buses. The Bus its self had a WC thankfully but some cases very hard to use on route for some people!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\">One arrival at Souther Cross I manage gather info that the Evening service was a loco haul 18:43!!!<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em><strong>From my observation: <\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>As those fitters could of arrived shortly after we left and rectified the locomotive and stabilised the issue with N452 fuel leak as I got gist of what it meant pulling it apart and replacing something.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Made it safer it to point to get a train order arranged and possibly ran it empty cars to the workshop under certain conditions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>As report was made on the unfastened seat on BZN258 another safety concern<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Increase maintenance on current fleet <\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><strong>Conclusion:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em><strong>Maybe some options could be considered or suggested to our budding Assist CEO of V\/line who has background of Metropolitan Train Operations? <\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/rocketreach.co\/warwick-horsley-email_4686914\">https:\/\/rocketreach.co\/warwick-horsley-email_4686914<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">Warwick Horsley, based in Melbourne, VIC, AU,s currently an Acting CEO at V\/Line.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Warwick Horsley brings experience from previous roles at V\/Line, Metro Trains Melbourne<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li> Transdev and Public Transport Victoria. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Warwick Horsley holds a 2015 &#8211; 2015 Transition to General Management @ INSEAD. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>With a robust skill set that includes Rail, Stakeholder Management, Change Management, Project Management, Project Planning&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><strong>After a cramped bus coach ride to Melbourne some people avoid buses as it not the best way for long haul travel if some people fall in any of these categories: <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Body stature size ie: Height or size<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Complexed dietary requirements<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Mobility<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Water works issues and other medical issues etc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<details class=\"wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow\"><summary>For such incidents how can they arrange the process of allowing a train service to continue with minimal disruption with less bus transfers?<br><br>[please click on arrow to see suggestions]<br><br><\/summary>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Geelong yard there is a few N class locomotives sitting there at time what stopping them from keeping some those unused loco at Bendigo Workshop for such events?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What happened, and was the work order for the job delayed in anyway?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>As I understand Bendigo is roughly 2 hrs away from Swan Hill.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>What stopping them doing a light engine movement to Swan Hill?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How about redirect ground staff ie:Shunters etc. to assist this role?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Whist at Swan Hill uncouple the defective loco  from the train and shunt it  in the siding of the yard off the mainline and couple up the <strong>&#8220;Substitute&#8221; <\/strong>Locomotive to run the service?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Plus when the seemly qualified fitters etc. are delayed it may lessen the need for Train Replacements!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Plus arrange a light engine movement back to Bendigo Railway Workshop and rectify problems <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>And send back to ground zero aka Southern Cross or Spencer St Station Melb Yard in the quieter hrs when not many service are operating.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/details>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><strong>My observation is:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em>How about a suggesting the top Management Team stop cutting maintenance funding on the older Fit For Purpose trains to justify a series of bad decisions that was made<\/em> previously<em>?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The IMU known as &#8220;VoLcity&#8221; Rail Cars is being pushed beyond it design and mechanical limitations on the Warrnambool, Gippsland, Shepparton and Albury lines etc as the user unfriendly <strong>&#8220;One Size fits All Concept&#8221;
