{"id":22856,"date":"2024-03-27T09:37:28","date_gmt":"2024-03-26T23:37:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/?p=22856"},"modified":"2024-03-27T09:37:28","modified_gmt":"2024-03-26T23:37:28","slug":"swiss-report-drop-in-trans-alpine-rail-freight","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/?p=22856","title":{"rendered":"Swiss report drop in trans-Alpine rail freight"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>RAIL freight travelling through the Swiss Alps suffered a 5.9% reduction in 2023 compared with 2022, says Switzerland\u2019s Federal Transport Office (BAV).<\/p>\n<p>Overall, 37 million tonnes of freight were transported on Swiss Alpine road and rail links, a 4.7% drop compared with 2022, with road freight falling by 1.4%.<\/p>\n<p>As a result, BAV says the target to shift 650,000 road trips to rail was missed and rail\u2019s share of all transalpine freight transport through Switzerland fell from 72.9 to 72%.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe main reason for the reduction in transalpine rail freight transport is the difficult economic situation in Europe, triggered by the war in Ukraine, the energy crisis and problems with supply chains,\u201d BAV says. \u201cIn addition, there is still poor reliability, especially because of the many construction sites on the north-south axis.
