{"id":22002,"date":"2024-03-23T06:36:42","date_gmt":"2024-03-22T20:36:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/?p=22002"},"modified":"2024-03-23T06:36:42","modified_gmt":"2024-03-22T20:36:42","slug":"good-news-friday-your-weekly-roundup-of-positive-rail-news-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/?p=22002","title":{"rendered":"Good News Friday: Your weekly roundup of positive rail news!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>for the green team: rail industry partnership recognised for first sustainable travel toolkit<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p>Train operator <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crosscountrytrains.co.uk\/\">CrossCountry<\/a> and the<a href=\"https:\/\/communityrail.org.uk\/\"> Community Rail Education Network (CREN)<\/a> have been recognised for work on the UK\u2019s first educational toolkit on sustainable travel.<\/p>\n<p>The Sustainable Travel Education Toolkit won first place for \u201cInfluencing Positive Change &amp; Sustainability\u201d at the Community Rail Awards in Swansea earlier this week.<\/p>\n<p>The new toolkit \u2013 aimed at Key Stage Two students \u2013 has been developed to teach young people about the green credentials of the rail network and encourage them to make more sustainable travel choices.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s the first time that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crosscountrytrains.co.uk\/\">CrossCountry<\/a> has won an award as a train operator at the hotly-contested Community Rail Awards, which mainly recognises work by <a href=\"https:\/\/communityrail.org.uk\/\">Community Rail Partnerships<\/a> across the country.<\/p>\n<p>The development of the toolkit was funded by a \u00a312,000 investment from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crosscountrytrains.co.uk\/\">CrossCountry\u2019s<\/a> Community Engagement Fund and supported by the <a href=\"https:\/\/communityrail.org.uk\/\">Community Rail Education Network<\/a> and Tyne Valley Community Rail Partnership.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.crosscountrytrains.co.uk\/\">CrossCountry\u2019s<\/a> Stakeholder Liaison Manager for the North East &amp; Scotland, Alex Bray, said:\u00a0\u201cIt\u2019s wonderful to be recognised for this fantastic set of resources promoting sustainable travel choices to young people across the UK.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSince we launched the toolkit at the National Railway Museum we\u2019ve had great responses from children and teachers alike \u2013 I\u2019d encourage any Key Stage Two educators to download it for free and incorporate it into green teaching!\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Karen Bennet, Chair of the <a href=\"https:\/\/communityrail.org.uk\/\">Community Rail Education Network,<\/a> said:\u00a0\u201cI\u2019m delighted that \u2018Travel with the Green Team\u2019 has been recognised at the Community Rail Awards in such a competitive category.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s been fantastic to work together across the industry to create such engaging resources for primary school children to learn how to make, and to talk about, more sustainable choices in travel.\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Other Community Rail Partnerships supported by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crosscountrytrains.co.uk\/\">CrossCountry<\/a> were recognised for another 16 awards in a hotly-contested evening, with a bumper crop of 18 months of community work available to be nominated.<\/p>\n<p>Jools Townsend, chief executive at the <a href=\"https:\/\/communityrail.org.uk\/\">Community Rail Network<\/a>, said:\u00a0\u201cOur Community Rail Awards give deserved recognition to community rail partnerships, groups and volunteers across Britain and now beyond. This year\u2019s ceremony in Swansea saw 430 guests from across the community rail movement and transport sector celebrating community rail\u2019s role building stronger, fairer, greener communities, served and connected by their railways and wider sustainable transport network.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201c<\/strong>It was fantastic to have our first winners from outside Britain this year. Our congratulations go to all our winners, and thanks to everyone who supports and champions community rail across the rail and transport field, helping the movement to go from strength to strength.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To download the Sustainable Travel Education Toolkit, visit:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.crosscountrytrains.co.uk\/xc-community-hub\/sustainable-travel-educational-toolkit\">www.crosscountrytrains.co.uk\/xc-community-hub\/sustainable-travel-educational-toolkit<\/a><\/p>\n<p>To find out more about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crosscountrytrains.co.uk\/\">CrossCountry\u2019s<\/a> work with Community Rail Partnerships, visit:\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.crosscountrytrains.co.uk\/xc-community-hub\/community-rail-partnerships\">www.crosscountrytrains.co.uk\/xc-community-hub\/community-rail-partnerships<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"story__title\"><strong>Northern stations win big at Cheshire Best Kept Stations Awards<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<div class=\"story__summary\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.northernrailway.co.uk\/\">Northern<\/a>-managed stations have picked up top gongs at the Cheshire Best Kept Stations Awards.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"story__body\">\n<p>Alderley Edge won the top award, being named \u2018Cheshire Best Kept Station\u2019 in 2023.<\/p>\n<p>It follows praise for the station\u00a0by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rhs.org.uk\/\">Royal Horticultural Society<\/a> in October 2023\u00a0when its floral offering was recognised as \u2018Outstanding\u2019 by the UK\u2019s leading garden charity.<\/p>\n<p>The station has also recently seen\u00a0investment in CCTV provision\u00a0as part of a roll-out of 612 new cameras across the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.northernrailway.co.uk\/\">Northern<\/a> network.<\/p>\n<p>The awards, which are celebrating their 21st\u00a0anniversary this year, were presented by Professor Paul Salveson MBE in Northwich last week (Tues 12 March).<\/p>\n<p>Also picking up an award was Brinnington station, which was named \u2018Best Staffed Station\u2019.\u00a0The station was in the national media spotlight in 2023 following the\u00a0success of a \u2018Swap Shop\u2019 created at the station for the local community by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.northernrailway.co.uk\/\">Northern<\/a> colleagues Stewart Hall and Darin Astbury.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Other <a href=\"https:\/\/www.northernrailway.co.uk\/\">Northern<\/a>-managed stations that picked up awards were:\u00a0Greenbank\u00a0(Best Unstaffed Station),\u00a0Rose Hill\u00a0(In Bloom Award),\u00a0Disley\u00a0(Sustainability Award),\u00a0Goostrey\u00a0(Art Project Award) and\u00a0Romiley\u00a0(King\u2019s Coronation Award).<\/p>\n<p>Delamere\u00a0won the Cheshire West and Chester Award,\u00a0Glazebrook\u00a0won the Halton &amp; the passion, commitment, ingenuity, resourcefulness and sheer hard work has improved your stations for passengers, the community, the railway and for yourselves.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In a rallying call to volunteer groups across the county, he added: \u201cPlease keep on doing what you are doing!\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span>Steaming ahead: Lumo strengthens pioneering partnership with Beamish Museum<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span>Popular open access train operator <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lumo.co.uk\/\">Lumo<\/a> has renewed its partnership with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beamish.org.uk\/\">Beamish Museum<\/a> which is the North East of England\u2019s most visited tourist attraction according to a new report by the Association of Leading Visitor Attractions (ALVA).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lumo.co.uk\/\">Lumo<\/a> will carry thousands of people to the region this week as English Tourism Week gets in full swing, celebrating the quality and value of English tourism.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Beamish Museum welcomed Lumo as the very first \u2018Business Champion\u2019 member as part of a pioneering partnership established in 2023. The cinema will be recreated, incorporating as many elements and features of the original building as possible, and brought to life including screening films, period newsreels and adverts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The positive economic contribution of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lumo.co.uk\/\">Lumo<\/a> was assessed by an independent report launched last month.
