It forms part of the wider \u00a3143 million East Kilbride enhancement project, which also includes electrifying the railway line to reduce carbon emissions.<\/p>\n<p>The \u00a316 million facility enhances travel opportunities for a wide range of passengers, connecting them to essential services, employment, and education. It\u2019s particularly vital for patients, staff and visitors to Hairmyres Hospital. The new building is 600 metres west of its original site and features modern waiting areas and step-free access to ensure a safe, comfortable and accessible journey for everyone.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, with the Scottish Government&#8217;s recent decision to eliminate peak train fares starting this September, train travel is becoming more attractive and affordable than ever.<\/p>\n<p>Fiona Hyslop MSP, Cabinet Secretary for Transport, said: \u201cIt is a pleasure to witness years of planning and project delivery come to fruition with the opening of the new Hairmyres Station. It is a clear example of this Scottish Government\u2019s continued commitment to investing in Scotland\u2019s railway and the benefits that this can bring to local communities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaking rail more attractive is a fundamental part of encouraging greater public transport use and this latest opening is an exciting milestone as we move towards the completion of the East Kilbride electrification later this year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The 16-week programme also allowed Network Rail engineering teams to complete extensive work beyond the new station construction. This included laying new tracks, upgrading signalling systems and installing 22km of overheard power lines necessary for electrification. It\u2019s a proud moment for everyone involved.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut the work doesn\u2019t stop there. The project continues its journey with significant improvements still to come. Each milestone brings us a step closer to delivering a railway that\u2019s fit for the future \u2013 one that\u2019s more reliable, efficient and sustainable for generations to come.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Joanne Maguire, ScotRail Managing Director, added: \u201cWe\u2019re delighted to welcome customers back to the East Kilbride line and to the brand-new Hairmyres station.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese improvements are about more than just infrastructure \u2013 they help to deliver a safe, reliable, and green rail service that provides a positive experience for our customers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith modern facilities, improved accessibility, and the upcoming removal of peak fares, there\u2019s never been a better time to choose to travel by train.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFollowing the completion of the enhancement works later this year, we hope even more people will leave the car at home and make rail their preferred way to travel sustainably.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The station at Hairmyres will also have a new \u00a37.2 million transport interchange delivered in partnership with South Lanarkshire Council and SPT. It includes park and ride and bus facilities, with approximately 500 spaces and traffic signal-controlled junctions to access the car parks. In addition, there will be new active travel connections and cycle parking, as well as an upgraded junction nearby and a new pedestrian crossing on Eaglesham Road.<\/p>\n<p>Several key milestones remain in the project, which is due to complete by December 2025, including the reopening of the upgraded East Kilbride station this summer.<\/p>\n<p>Network Rail will continue to work closely with partners and contractors including AmcoGiffen, Story, SPL Powerlines, QTS, Rail Systems Alliance and Siemens.<\/p>\n<p>Jim Double, regional managing director of AmcoGiffen, said: \u201cAmcoGiffen are proud to have played a key role in delivering the new Hairmyres Station alongside Network Rail.
