{"id":216221,"date":"2025-05-13T19:47:00","date_gmt":"2025-05-13T09:47:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/railuk.com\/?p=177535"},"modified":"2025-05-13T19:47:00","modified_gmt":"2025-05-13T09:47:00","slug":"digital-signalling-upgrades-affecting-journeys-between-london-and-peterborough-royston-this-weekend","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/?p=216221","title":{"rendered":"Digital signalling upgrades affecting journeys between London and Peterborough\/Royston this weekend"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/railuk.com\/signalling-and-telecoms\/digital-signalling-upgrades-affecting-journeys-between-london-and-peterborough-royston-this-weekend\/\" title=\"Digital signalling upgrades affecting journeys between London and Peterborough\/Royston this weekend\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"485\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.railuk.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/13103348\/nwrecdp-485x360.jpg\" class=\"webfeedsFeaturedVisual wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" style=\"display: block; margin-bottom: 5px; clear:both;max-width: 100%;\" link_thumbnail=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.railuk.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/13103348\/nwrecdp-485x360.jpg 485w, https:\/\/cdn.railuk.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/13103348\/nwrecdp-80x60.jpg 80w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 485px) 100vw, 485px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Thameslink and Great Northern passengers reminded that no trains will travel to and from London and Peterborough\/Royston this weekend (17-18 May) as work to transform East Coast Main Line continues.<\/p>\n<p>Teams will carry out significant upgrades as part of \u00a31.4 billion East Coast Digital Programme (ECDP), including removing traditional signals in a major milestone for the project.<\/p>\n<p>As we prepare for a weekend of service alterations, we are today releasing an animated video to help explain ECDP and the benefits of digital in-cab signalling.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Network Rail and the passenger operators have collaborated to produce the video, which outlines the different stages involved with ECDP, and how it will ultimately deliver more reliable, less disrupted, and greener services for passengers on the East Coast Main Line.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-wp-embed is-provider-wistia-inc wp-block-embed-wistia-inc\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" title=\"ECDP animation with captions Video\" src=\"https:\/\/fast.wistia.net\/embed\/iframe\/wivvlm2bm0?dnt=1&#038;seo=true&#038;%23038;web_component=true%23?secret=qg9KZFftnH\" data-secret=\"qg9KZFftnH\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" width=\"696\" height=\"392\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>There will be no trains this weekend between London and Peterborough\/Royston, or between Moorgate and Stevenage (via Hertford North), and rail replacement buses covering various journeys*.<\/p>\n<p>Network Rail colleagues will test digital signalling between Welwyn Garden City and Hitchin \u2013 ahead of this section going live in early 2026 \u2013 and carry out preparatory digital signalling work between Biggleswade and Peterborough.<\/p>\n<p>The signal removal work between Moorgate and Finsbury Park marks a significant milestone, as this section becomes Britain\u2019s first fully \u2018no signals\u2019 commuter railway, with trains operating solely with in-cab digital signalling, and not the traditional, trackside traffic-light signals. Great Northern services already use digital signalling on this stretch, so removing the physical signals completes the transition to a fully digital railway route.<\/p>\n<p>Due to the engineering work, there will be no services to or from London King&#8217;s Cross on 17 and 18 May.
