{"id":21406,"date":"2024-03-21T08:01:22","date_gmt":"2024-03-20T22:01:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.railexpress.com.au\/?p=115681"},"modified":"2024-03-21T08:01:22","modified_gmt":"2024-03-20T22:01:22","slug":"boom-times-for-bedford-road-level-crossing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/?p=21406","title":{"rendered":"Boom times for Bedford Road level crossing"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.railexpress.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Bedord-2.jpeg\" alt=\"\" style=\"float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;\"><figcaption>Image\/Ringwood &#038; District Historical Society.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<div id=\"content_container_851247\">\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><strong>Be it horse and wagons or station wagons,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/bigbuild.vic.gov.au\/projects\/level-crossing-removal-project\/projects\/bedford-road-ringwood\">Bedford Road<\/a>&#8216;s dangerous and congested level crossing has been causing traffic headaches for more than 130 years.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"more-115681\"><\/span>Now, the busy Ringwood level crossing will be history, with trains soon set to run through a 380m rail trench under Bedford Road.<\/p>\n<p>Safety at the Bedford Road crossing has been a concern since the rail line between Ringwood and Upper Ferntree Gully opened in 1889, with newspaper archives revealing multiple accidents and near misses at the site, which also served as a stock crossing for animals being taken to the weekly Ringwood Market.<\/p>\n<p>In July 1909,\u00a0<em>The Herald\u00a0<\/em>reported the death of Arthur Bertram Williams, 60, killed when he attempted to cross ahead of a train with his horse and cart.
