{"id":209733,"date":"2025-05-02T18:59:10","date_gmt":"2025-05-02T08:59:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/railuk.com\/?p=177208"},"modified":"2025-05-02T18:59:10","modified_gmt":"2025-05-02T08:59:10","slug":"island-line-services-resume-following-critical-repairs-to-historic-ryde-pier","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/?p=209733","title":{"rendered":"Island Line services resume following critical repairs to historic Ryde Pier"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/railuk.com\/travel\/island-line-services-resume-following-critical-repairs-to-historic-ryde-pier\/\" title=\"Island Line services resume following critical repairs to historic Ryde Pier\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"485\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.railuk.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/02095204\/Island-Line-passenger-service-Network-Rail-485x360.jpg\" class=\"webfeedsFeaturedVisual wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" style=\"display: block; margin-bottom: 5px; clear:both;max-width: 100%;\" link_thumbnail=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.railuk.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/02095204\/Island-Line-passenger-service-Network-Rail-485x360.jpg 485w, https:\/\/cdn.railuk.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/02095204\/Island-Line-passenger-service-Network-Rail-80x60.jpg 80w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 485px) 100vw, 485px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Island Line services from Ryde Pier to Shanklin have resumed today (Friday 2 May)following a complex programme to repair and refurbish the historic structure.<\/p>\n<p>The first service departed Ryde St Johns station at 05:23 and arrived at Ryde Pier Head station at 05:29, while the first train from Ryde Pier Head to Shanklin departed at 06:03.<\/p>\n<p>The line between Ryde Esplanade and Ryde Pier Head had been closed since September 2024 while teams of Network Rail and South Western Railway (SWR) engineers carried out vital repairs and maintenance to ensure the Pier can carry trains safely and reliably for generations to come.<\/p>\n<p>Over the past eight months, engineers have worked tirelessly and braved the elements to install 590 metres of new rail and replace 450 worn-out wooden sleepers with new composite sleepers which are more resilient to the extreme weather. The teams also installed 2,500 metres of new rail bearers \u2013 the steel girder that sits between the Pier sub structure and the sleepers and rails \u2013 and refurbished the underside of the Pier sub structure.<\/p>\n<p>Ahead of this morning\u2019s reopening, which has come four days earlier than planned, the entirety of the Island Line was closed for a week, while final preparations were completed, which included:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Building a new under track crossing at Brading to safely allow essential cabling to be transferred from one side of the railway to the other, which has been brought forward thanks to additional funding from the Department for Transport.<\/li>\n<li>Removing all materials and the temporary buffer stops at Ryde Pier.<\/li>\n<li>Testing signals to ensure the railway can operate safely and reliably.<\/li>\n<li>Completing train driver training to refresh knowledge<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-wp-embed is-provider-wistia-inc wp-block-embed-wistia-inc\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" title=\"First passenger services over Ryde Pier Video\" src=\"https:\/\/fast.wistia.net\/embed\/iframe\/c3megffp31?dnt=1#?secret=Gk0IdVy1dY\" data-secret=\"Gk0IdVy1dY\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" width=\"696\" height=\"392\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>George Murrell, Network Rail\u2019s Wessex route renewals director, said: \u201cI\u2019m delighted that full Island Line services have resumed this morning, four days ahead of schedule and in time for the May Day Bank Holiday. This is a busy and important time for the Island\u2019s tourism industry in which the railway has a critical role to play.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re aware this has been a long project and I\u2019m grateful to the support we\u2019ve received and patience and understanding from businesses, residents and the wider Island community .<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Isle of Wight deserves a safe, reliable and high performing railway and the completion of this significant and complex programme of vital repairs and maintenance will greatly support us in meeting this aspiration.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019d also like to pay tribute to the many engineers and colleagues who have worked so hard and in all manner of weather conditions to complete this important work ahead of schedule.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Neil Drury, South Western Railway\u2019s Infrastructure and Engineering Director, added: \u201cWe\u2019re very pleased to be running trains along the full length of the Island Line, from Ryde Pier Head to Shanklin, after a long but vitally important closure. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the year we celebrate 200 years of the modern railway, it\u2019s great to see that the historic Ryde Pier structure has been repaired and refurbished to support the railway long into the future.
