JAPAN\u2019s latest section of high-speed line opened on March 16, linking Tokyo with Tsuruga in Fukui prefecture. Six new stations were built as part of the 125km Hokuriku Shinkansen extension, construction of which started in 2012.<\/p>\n
The new line from Tsuruga, on the northern coast of Honshu, connects with the existing high-speed network at Kanazawa. Journey times of East Japan Railway (JR East) and West Japan Railway (JR West) trains to Tokyo have been cut by 50 minutes and now stand at 3h 8min.<\/p>\n
The extension is expected to boost the economy and redevelopment of the Noto Peninsula, that was badly damaged by an earthquake on January 1.<\/p>\n
A further extension of the Hokuriku Shinkansen is planned to Shin-Osaka in western Japan.<\/p>\n
