The Southern European Container Hub (SECH) terminal, managed by the PSA Italy, can now handle trains up to 400 metres in length. The facility, located in the heart of the port of Genoa, was in fact recently equipped with nine new tracks connected to the national network.<\/strong>
\n<\/span>With the new upgrade, the terminal can now handle up to 20 pairs of trains every day and create a first and last-mile rail connection at the terminal. The area, also known as Rugna Railway Park, was also equipped with new RMG cranes from K\u00fcnz, which should soon be operated remotely in semi-automatic mode.<\/p>\n

Innovative shifting plate<\/h2>\n

One of the main highlights brought by the terminal renovation, commissioned in January this year, was the introduction of a shifting plate for locomotives. \u201cThis is a device which enables us to automatically move locomotives between tracks, freeing all the tracks that were previously needed for shunting switches”, said Fabrizio Mansueto, project manager at Ports of Genoa. This, he said, allows the simultaneous operation of multiple trains, saving significant amounts of time.<\/p>\n

Containers, liquid bulks and\u2026semi-trailers?<\/h2>\n

The SECH terminal mostly handles containers and liquid bulk. However, there are hopes to put some semi-trailers on the new tracks as well, especially in view of the opening of the Terzo Valico, a new infrastructure which will allow this type of rail traffic to and from the port. A few companies specialised in transporting semi-trailers in the area, such as Stazioni Marittime, already showed interest in using the new infrastructure at the SECH terminal.<\/p>\n
