{"id":204160,"date":"2025-04-22T20:31:00","date_gmt":"2025-04-22T10:31:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/railuk.com\/?p=176752"},"modified":"2025-04-22T20:31:00","modified_gmt":"2025-04-22T10:31:00","slug":"emr-recovers-nearly-2-million-from-fare-dodgers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/?p=204160","title":{"rendered":"EMR recovers nearly \u00a32 million from fare dodgers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/railuk.com\/travel\/emr-recovers-nearly-2-million-from-fare-dodgers\/\" title=\"EMR recovers nearly \u00a32 million from fare dodgers\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"485\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.railuk.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/22103245\/emr-1-485x360.jpg\" class=\"webfeedsFeaturedVisual wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" style=\"display: block; margin-bottom: 5px; clear:both;max-width: 100%;\" link_thumbnail=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.railuk.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/22103245\/emr-1-485x360.jpg 485w, https:\/\/cdn.railuk.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/22103245\/emr-1-80x60.jpg 80w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 485px) 100vw, 485px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>East Midlands Railway (EMR) has recovered more than \u00a31.9 million from fare dodgers travelling between 1 April 2024 and 31 March 2025 \u2013 helping to reduce costs for taxpayers and fare-paying customers.<\/p>\n<p>During this period, its revenue protection officers and onboard staff issued 11,798 notices, returning a combined total of \u00a31,912,887.<\/p>\n<p>The notices were issued for several reasons, including:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Travelling without a valid ticket<\/li>\n<li>Travelling with a child ticket as an adult<\/li>\n<li>Travelling without a valid railcard<\/li>\n<li>Travelling beyond the destination printed on a ticket<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Philippa Cresswell, Customer Experience Director at East Midlands Railway, said: &#8220;The vast majority of customers do the right thing and pay for their travel \u2013 they understand that a fair and sustainable railway relies on everyone contributing.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Unfortunately, a small number continue to try and travel without paying. The impact of fare evasion is felt by our law-abiding, fare-paying customers and, ultimately, the taxpayer. It&#8217;s indefensible for certain individuals to believe they\u2019re exempt from paying for our services.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Put simply, fare evasion is a criminal offence, and we\u2019re committed to taking action against those who deliberately avoid paying.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Indeed, our revenue protection, fraud and security teams work both in uniform and plain clothes in order to monitor and catch fare evaders \u2013 whether they are travelling without a ticket, have a ticket for part of their journey, or are fraudulently travelling on a child\u2019s ticket.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Customers should buy their ticket from the ticket office, a ticket machine, or online.
