The aircraft was originally developed to bridge the gap between two other popular Boeing airliners, the Boeing 767 and the &#8220;Queen of the Skies&#8221;, the Boeing 747. It also replaced aging McDonnell Douglas DC-10s and Lockheed L-1011 TriStars that had previously flown commercially. The newest variant of the Boeing 777 series has been designated the Boeing 777X.
