The event was a cornerstone moment in the Heliophysics Big Year, a global celebration of the Sun\u2019s influence on Earth and the entire solar system. Millions of people across North America witnessed the Moon crossing in front of the Sun, creating this brilliant celestial event. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=LlY79zjud-Q\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NASA\u2019s live broadcast<\/a> had more than 11 million views across different platforms.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The Ring of Fire: 2023 Annular Solar Eclipse (NASA Recap)\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/a1IADV3lz0Y?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">On Oct. 14, 2023, an annular solar eclipse crossed North, Central, and South America. NASA shared tips on eclipse safety, including through a video with <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/NASASun\/status\/1710414640599974394\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NSYNC\u2019s Lance Bass<\/a> and even with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/reel\/CwiRov1rEs4\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">an augmented reality filter<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/get-involved\/citizen-science\/nasas-scientists-and-volunteers-tackle-the-october-14-solar-eclipse\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Scientists<\/a> also studied conditions during the annular eclipse with <a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/solar-system\/skywatching\/eclipses\/solar-eclipses\/2023-solar-eclipse\/to-study-atmosphere-nasa-rockets-will-fly-into-oct-eclipses-shadow\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sounding rockets<\/a>, balloons, and amateur radio.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Total Solar Eclipse<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h2>\n<p>On April 8, 2024, millions of people across North America experienced a total solar eclipse that darkened parts of 15 U.S. states in the path of totality.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Ahead of the event, NASA hosted a widespread safety campaign, handed out over 2 million solar viewing glasses, and produced an <a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/eclipses\/future-eclipses\/eclipse-2024\/where-when\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">interactive map<\/a> to help viewers plan their viewing experience. On eclipse day, NASA also hosted a <a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/eclipses\/future-eclipses\/eclipse-2024\/live\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">live broadcast<\/a> from locations across the country, drawing over 38 million views.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Researchers studied the eclipse and its effects on Earth using <a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/science-research\/heliophysics\/scientists-share-early-results-from-nasas-solar-eclipse-experiments\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a variety of techniques<\/a>, including international radar networks, scientific rockets, weather balloons, and even high-altitude NASA WB-57 jets. Several <a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/eclipses\/future-eclipses\/eclipse-2024\/eclipse-2024-citizen-science\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NASA-funded citizen science projects<\/a> also conducted experiments. The circles represent the orbits of the major outer planets: Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. Launched in 1977, Voyager 1 visited the planets Jupiter and Saturn. The spacecraft is now 13 billion miles from Earth, making it the farthest and fastest-moving human-made object ever built. In fact, Voyager 1 is now zooming through interstellar space, the region between the stars that is filled with gas, dust, and material recycled from dying stars. NASA\u2019s Hubble Space Telescope is observing the material along Voyager\u2019s path through space.<\/div>\n<div class=\"hds-credits\">NASA\/STSci<\/div>\n<\/figcaption><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>While the goal of the NASA heliophysics fleet is to study the Sun and its influence, these missions often make surprising discoveries that they weren\u2019t originally designed to. From finding 5,000 comets to studying the surface of Venus, NASA highlighted and celebrated these <a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/science-research\/heliophysics\/5-surprising-nasa-heliophysics-discoveries-not-related-to-the-sun\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">bonus science connections<\/a> during the Helio Big Year.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Solar Maximum<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h2>\n<p>Similar to Earth, the Sun has its own seasons of activity, with a solar minimum and solar maximum during a cycle that lasts about 11 years. The Helio Big Year happened to coincide with the Sun\u2019s active period, with NASA and NOAA announcing in October 2024 that the Sun had <a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/science-research\/heliophysics\/nasa-noaa-sun-reaches-maximum-phase-in-11-year-solar-cycle\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reached solar maximum<\/a>, the highest period of activity. <a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/science-research\/heliophysics\/how-nasa-tracked-the-most-intense-solar-storm-in-decades\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Some of the largest solar storms<\/a> on current record occurred in 2024, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=KMaIPK6_cfQ\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">largest sunspot<\/a> in nearly a decade was spotted in the spring of 2024, followed by a colossal X9.0 solar flare <a href=\"https:\/\/svs.gsfc.nasa.gov\/14701\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Oct. 3, 2024<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"NASA\u2019s Illuminate: Largest Sunspot in Almost a Decade\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/KMaIPK6_cfQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Sunspots are cooler, darker areas on the solar surface where the Sun\u2019s magnetic field gets especially intense, often leading to explosive solar eruptions. This sunspot group was so big that nearly 14 Earths could fit inside it! The eruptions from this region resulted in the historic May 2024 geomagnetic storms, when the aurora borealis, or northern lights, were seen as far south as the Florida Keys.<br \/>Credit: NASA\/Beth Anthony<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Viewers across the U.S. spotted auroras in their communities as a result of these storms, proving that you can <a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/feature\/nasas-guide-to-finding-and-photographing-auroras\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">capture amazing aurora photography without advanced equipment<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Big Finale: Parker\u2019s Close Approach to the Sun<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h2>\n<p>NASA\u2019s Parker Solar Probe holds the title as the closest human-made object to the Sun. On Dec. 24, 2024, <a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/science-research\/heliophysics\/nasas-parker-solar-probe-makes-history-with-closest-pass-to-sun\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Parker made history<\/a> by traveling just 3.8 million miles from the Sun\u2019s surface at a whopping 430,000 miles per hour.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFlying this close to the Sun is a historic moment in humanity\u2019s first mission to a star,\u201d said Nicky Fox, associate administrator, Science Mission Directorate, NASA Headquarters.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Parker Solar Probe: Humanity\u2019s Closest Encounter with the Sun\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/c80TzqNoqMg?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Controllers have confirmed NASA\u2019s mission to \u201ctouch\u201d the Sun survived its record-breaking closest approach to the solar surface on Dec. 24, 2024.\u00a0<br \/>Credit: NASA\/Joy Ng<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Parker Solar Probe\u2019s close approach capped off a momentous <a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/sun\/helio-big-year\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Heliophysics Big Year<\/a> that allowed NASA scientists to gather unprecedented data and invited everyone to celebrate how the Sun impacts us all. In the growing field of heliophysics, the Helio Big Year reminded us all how the Sun touches everything and how important it is to continue studying our star\u2019s incredible influence.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A Big Year Ahead<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h2>\n<p>Though the Helio Big Year is over, heliophysics is only picking up its pace in 2025. We remain in the solar maximum phase, so heightened solar activity will continue into the near future. In addition, several new missions are expected to join the heliophysics fleet by year\u2019s end.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/mission\/punch\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">PUNCH<\/a> mission, a set of four Sun-watching satellites imaging solar eruptions in three dimensions, and <a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/mission\/ezie\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">EZIE<\/a>, a trio of Earth-orbiting satellites tracing the electrical currents powering Earth\u2019s auroras, have already launched. The <a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/science-research\/heliophysics\/nasas-lexi-will-provide-x-ray-vision-of-earths-magnetosphere\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">LEXI<\/a> instrument, an X-ray telescope studying Earth\u2019s magnetosphere from the Moon, also launched through NASA\u2019s CLPS (Commercial Lunar Payload Services)\u202finitiative.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Future missions slated for launch include <a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/mission\/tracers\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">TRACERS<\/a>, which will investigate the unusual magnetic environment near Earth\u2019s poles, and <a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/mission\/escapade\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ESCAPADE<\/a>, venturing to Mars to measure the planet\u2019s unique magnetic environment.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The last two missions will share a ride to space. The <a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/mission\/carruthers-geocorona-observatory\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Carruthers Geocorona Observatory<\/a> will look back at home, studying ultraviolet light emitted by the outermost boundaries of our planet\u2019s atmosphere. The <a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/mission\/imap\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">IMAP<\/a> mission will instead look to the outermost edges of our heliosphere, mapping the boundaries where the
