Northern<\/a> has revealed the most popular websites accessed by its customers whilst travelling on-board their trains.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

After \u2018pings\u2019 to update time, date and location settings \u2013 as well as people connecting to virtual private networks (VPNs) \u2013 the top destination websites are:<\/p>\n

\n6. Spotify<\/p>\n

2. Snapchat
\n7. X (formerly Twitter)<\/p>\n

3. Whatsapp
\n8. Facebook<\/p>\n

4. Instagram
\n9. iTunes<\/p>\n

5. TikTok
\n10. Gmail<\/p>\n

Mark Powles, commercial and customer director at Northern<\/a>, said: \u201cOne of the benefits of letting the train take the strain is that you\u2019re free to relax and enjoy the journey.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s clear our customers use the time on-board to keep in touch with friends via social media and other messaging apps as well as relax and listen to music.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor those using the train to commute to work, the average journey time is 25 minutes in each direction \u2013 that\u2019s 50 minutes a day they can use in a way that suits them rather than sitting in traffic behind the wheel of a car.\u201d<\/p>\n

Northern<\/a> has a long-running campaign to encourage people to convert their commute from road to rail. Using the \u2018Savings Calculator\u2019 on the Northern<\/a> website, anyone can compare the cost, journey time and carbon footprint of their commute versus the same journey made by car.<\/p>\n

WiFi on-board Northern<\/a> services is delivered in partnership with \u2018Friendly WiFi\u2019 \u2013 a government-initiated safe certification standard for public WiFi.<\/p>\n

Friendly WiFi aims to reassure users that the service meets minimum filtering standards \u2013 particularly in areas where children are present, such as in Northern\u2019s<\/a> stations and on-board their trains.<\/p>\n

Northern<\/a> has been a member of the scheme, which is delivered in partnership with the UK Council for Child Internet Safety (UKCCIS), since 2017.<\/p>\n

In 2023, Northern<\/a>\u00a0warned people against viewing \u2018NSFW\u2019 content\u00a0(Not Suitable For Work) on their trains and told them to \u2018wait till you get home\u2019 out of respect to other passengers.<\/p>\n

Northern<\/a> is the second largest train operator in the UK, with 2,500 services a day to more than 500 stations across the North of England.<\/p>\n
