{"id":192225,"date":"2025-03-29T01:52:29","date_gmt":"2025-03-28T15:52:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.railwaymuseum.org.uk\/?p=14926"},"modified":"2025-03-29T01:52:29","modified_gmt":"2025-03-28T15:52:29","slug":"50-years-of-volunteering","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/?p=192225","title":{"rendered":"50 years of Volunteering"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">As the National Railway Museum celebrates 50 years of making memories, we shine the spotlight on some of our long-standing members of our volunteer community who have played an invaluable part in the museum\u2019s history. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559739&quot;:0}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Rob Tibbits<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\"> who was recently awarded the Platinum Award for 50 years&#8217; volunteering at the National Railway Museum remembers clearly his first day as a volunteer on 27 September 1975, the day the National Railway Museum was opened by Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_14928\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14928\" style=\"width: 988px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.railwaymuseum.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/RobTibbits-3.png\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-14928\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.railwaymuseum.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/RobTibbits-3.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"988\" height=\"915\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.railwaymuseum.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/RobTibbits-3.png 988w, https:\/\/blog.railwaymuseum.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/RobTibbits-3-300x278.png 300w, https:\/\/blog.railwaymuseum.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/RobTibbits-3-768x711.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 988px) 100vw, 988px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-14928\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Rob receives his award for 50 years of volunteering<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">He witnessed the auspicious occasion with <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">David Eastoe<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">, who <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.railwaymuseum.org.uk\/a-remarkable-journey-celebrating-david-eastoes-volunteer-legacy\/\">retired from volunteering just last year following 49 years of service<\/a>. The event is etched in their memory.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u2018Just before the official opening Dr John Coiley, the museum\u2019s first director, decided it would be a good thing to have some volunteering activity taking place on the day, in case the Duke of Edinburgh chose to look outside. Along with David, I was asked to clean Flying Scotsman, which was visiting as part of the Stockton &amp; Darlington Railway\u2019s 150th anniversary.\u2019<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u2018In the event, the Duke only caught a glimpse of Scotsman and its cleaners as the Royal Train, hauled by a Class 47, approached York Station from the north. Our aim was to help the museum to fund the restoration of locomotives.
