The tension began late in the evening of February 24, 1942, when U.S. military radar detected an unidentified object approximately 120 miles west of Los Angeles. Air raid sirens blared across the city and a blackout order was issued, as residents feared an impending Japanese aerial attack following the recent bombing of Pearl Harbor.<\/p>\n
