However, a ration of such sobriquets should be reserved for one particular project. The work on the railway linking the east and west coasts across the industrial north of England.<\/strong><br \/>\n<span id=\"more-60222\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The growing pains of the Transpennine Route Upgrade are being felt across the entire core of the line. However, the multi-year project is progressing at many locations. The project management is tight-lipped about the finishing date, but also tight-lipped about the eventual level of benefits &#8211; which could give solace to freight operators.<\/p>\n<h2>Closures in the town centre<\/h2>\n<p>There are those eager for more infrastructure. They argue that more tracks mean more trains. However, that perhaps overlooks the other capacity advantages that the modern railway has at its disposal. While the case for more tracks is seemingly more difficult to make than, say, the case for more lanes on the motorways of Britain, the railways can be smart as well, without any compromise on safety margins &#8211; a severe criticism that has been pointed at the discredited roads policy of making emergency lanes into running lanes.<\/p>\n<div class=\"youtube-container\" style=\"height:0;overflow:hidden;padding-bottom:56.25%;position:relative;width:100%;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-embed\" style=\"bottom:0;height:100%;left:0;position:absolute;right:0;top:0;width:100%;\" width=\"960\" height=\"540\" src=\"https:\/\/youtube.com\/embed\/8rnx-j_Pfwo?rel=0&amp;autoplay=0&amp;mute=0\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen allow=\"accelerrometer; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>The freight lobby will continue to campaign for more capacity. However, they can be consoled in the knowledge that today\u2019s freight formations can approach the end-to-end timings of all but the fastest passenger services. Add to that a radical signalling overall, and mixed traffic can be better accommodated on shared lines. Perhaps even the government-mandated increase in rail freight can be accommodated.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"readmore\">\n<div class=\"readmore-item\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.railfreight.com\/railfreight\/2024\/07\/22\/uk-rail-freight-by-the-numbers\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.railfreight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/shutterstock_1185156196-128x128.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"readmore-thumbnail\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<div class=\"readmore-info\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.railfreight.com\/railfreight\/2024\/07\/22\/uk-rail-freight-by-the-numbers\/\" class=\"readmore-title\">UK rail freight by the numbers<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<h2>Big bridge, but bigger project to come<\/h2>\n<p>Perhaps most keenly observed will be the work underway in the former cotton mill spinning toen of Huddersfield. A central thoroughfare (Bradford Road and Northgate) will be closed to vehicles and pedestrians over some Sundays and full weekends between February and May. This will facilitate extensive works on the bridge that spans the junction, known locally as Huddersfield Viaduct. Image: \u00a9 Network Rail\/TRU Project<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The work to Huddersfield Viaduct comes ahead of a 30-day closure of Huddersfield station between Saturday 30 August and Monday 29 September 2025, when track and platform remodelling work will be carried out.\u00a0There will also be a restoration of the station roof to accompany improved passenger facilities.<\/p>\n<h2>Years and years and miles to go<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cAs the largest investment that\u2019s ever been made into rail in our region, the <a href=\"https:\/\/thetrupgrade.co.uk\/\"  rel=\"noopener\">Transpennine Route Upgrade<\/a> will transform train travel between Manchester, Huddersfield, Leeds and York,\u201d says a project statement. However, on the subject of timescale, there is a little vagueness. \u201cIt\u2019s an ambitious long-term\u00a0programme that\u2019ll\u00a0take years\u00a0to deliver, but we\u2019re already hard at work and things are well on track,\u201d they say.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, in Huddersfield, the huge cranes will be on site for several months. There are very visible reminders that the project is actively underway.
