WORK has started on the \u20ac460m Bergamo hub project in northern Italy. It comprises three main elements:<\/p>\n
a new railway station, which will eventually become Bergamo\u2019s integrated transport hub and will connect the northern and southern halves of the city via new overbuilding links<\/p>\n
track doubling of the existing single line between Bergamo and Ponte San Pietro, including removal of level crossings and construction of a new station at Curno, plus an upgraded station at Bergamo Hospital, and<\/p>\n
the creation of a new 5.3km line linking Bergamo with Orio Al Serio airport.<\/p>\n
Construction of the \u20ac113m double-track airport line started last year. For the first kilometre it runs parallel with the existing Bergamo – Montello line, before diverging onto a new alignment, and terminating at a four-platform surface level station, connected to the airport by a pedestrian tunnel.<\/p>\n
The Bergamo hub project is led by infrastructure manager Italian Rail Network (RFI), with all elements due to complete by the end of 2026.<\/p>\n
RFI says the investment at Bergamo will provide passengers with fast and sustainable transport solutions and will contribute to the reduction of road traffic and the optimisation of regional and international connections.<\/p>\n
