A record volume of rail freight was transported into China from Kazakhstan in 2024. The number amounted to 32 million tonnes, up by 13 per cent compared to 2023. The success was followed up by the two countries allowing double the amount of trains to cross the border into China later this year.<\/strong>
\n<\/span>China and Kazakhstan agreed to allow 15 daily trains to cross the border into China at the Altynkol – Khorgos checkpoint. The measure will go into effect on 1 March. At the Dostyk – Alashankou crossing, 28 daily trains will be allowed through from 1 July.<\/p>\n

Besides the increased maximum number of trains entering China, the countries announced some other plans for 2025 and 2025. Firstly, a transport-logistical hub will be built in the Almaty area. The Dostyk – Alashankou border crossing will be further developed as well. Lastly, the two sides will create a \u201cmixed commission\u201d on freight transport cooperation.<\/p>\n

Major investment<\/h2>\n

Kazakhstan can also count on a major investment from China. The authorities of border province Xinjiang decided on a one billion yuan (132 million euros) investment. Those are to be spent on a transport-logistical hub, but it is unclear if that refers to the hub in Almaty.<\/p>\n
