{"id":17606,"date":"2024-03-05T13:38:28","date_gmt":"2024-03-05T03:38:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/?p=17606"},"modified":"2024-03-05T13:38:28","modified_gmt":"2024-03-05T03:38:28","slug":"two-northern-employees-inspire-the-next-generation-ahead-of-international-womens-day","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/?p=17606","title":{"rendered":"Two Northern employees inspire the next generation ahead of International Women\u2019s Day"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Two women working for train operator <a href=\"https:\/\/www.northernrailway.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Northern<\/a> have visited a Doncaster primary school to discuss rail safety and career opportunities. <\/p>\n<p>Conductor Team Manager Louise Whiteley and Conductor Bindu Painkal-Bowns visited Green Top Primary School last week to explain how their work ensures thousands of passengers can travel safely across the North of England on a daily basis.<\/p>\n<p>Some Year 5 and 6 pupils were offered the chance to wear a conductor\u2019s uniform, complete with a whistle, bumbag, ticket machine and ticket clippers.<\/p>\n<p>One of the children volunteered to sell tickets for a wide range of destinations to all of their classmates, on a machine that had been set to training mode.<\/p>\n<p>Bindu and Louise then discussed the importance of safety on the railways and the wide range of careers on offer to men and women, before taking questions from the children.<br \/>Kerry Peters, Regional Director for Northern, said: \u201cWe\u2019re always proud when the fantastic women we have in our business go above and beyond to support our communities in the North.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBindu and Louise did a brilliant job of teaching the boys and girls how to stay safe when they travel by train and getting them to think about a future career in rail.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She added: \u201cIt comes as we\u2019re encouraging more women to apply for the range of roles we have on offer, ahead of International Women\u2019s Day on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhether you\u2019re interested in driving a train, becoming a conductor, developing your engineering skills or taking on a supporting role in one of our offices, there\u2019s something for you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Northern said that it had made a series of changes to its recruitment processes in recent years, ensuring it has a more diverse workforce which represents the communities it serves.<\/p>\n<p>Women currently make up almost 20 per cent of the train operator\u2019s workforce, with more than 1,380 in roles across the business.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Two women working for train operator Northern have visited a Doncaster primary school to discuss rail safety and career opportunities.
