After Musk purchased X, reinstated Trump\u2019s account, began developing a relationship with the president and spent $250m on his re-election campaign, Trump\u2019s legal team considered abandoning the lawsuit,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/tech\/musks-x-agrees-to-pay-about-10-million-to-settle-trump-lawsuit-a38348f8\">the Wall Street Journal<\/a>&nbsp;reported, citing people familiar with the case.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But, ultimately, Trump\u2019s lawyers went ahead with the case.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The settlement will mark the second time a social media platform has paid Trump millions after the 2021 siege of the Capitol. In January, Meta agreed to pay the president $25m \u2013 including $22m to Trump\u2019s presidential library \u2013 to settle a similar lawsuit after Facebook suspended Trump\u2019s account. Trump\u2019s attorneys are expected to pursue a similar settlement with Google over its decision to ban the president from YouTube after the attack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In recent months, Trump has formed a close relationship with Musk, resulting in his appointment to lead the newly formed \u201cdepartment of government efficiency\u201d. On Tuesday, Musk&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2025\/feb\/11\/elon-musk-trump-doge\">took questions<\/a>&nbsp;from reporters alongside the president in an Oval Office ceremony regarding the closure of government offices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Trump\u2019s lawsuit against&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/twitter\">X<\/a>&nbsp;stems from the president\u2019s use of the platform, then still called Twitter, to spread falsehoods after he lost the 2020 election.
