{"id":17454,"date":"2024-03-05T09:59:07","date_gmt":"2024-03-04T23:59:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.railexpress.com.au\/?p=115505"},"modified":"2024-03-05T09:59:07","modified_gmt":"2024-03-04T23:59:07","slug":"rtbu-seeks-to-improve-level-crossing-safety","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/?p=17454","title":{"rendered":"RTBU seeks to improve level crossing safety"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Rail workers will be seeking mandatory safety cameras at level crossings, and increased penalties for drivers who cross in front of a train at tomorrow\u2019s national level crossing safety summit in Brisbane.<\/strong><span id=\"more-115505\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rtbu.org.au\/transport_now\">Rail, Tram and Bus Union<\/a> (RTBU) Assistant National Secretary Shayne Kummerfeld said significant decisions needed to be made for the safety of both rail workers and road users.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDespite the tragic double fatality at Bindarrah on New Year\u2019s Eve, motorists are continuing to drive straight through level crossings in front of trains,\u201d Kummerfeld said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is only a matter of time until another major incident occurs, and more people are killed.\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.railexpress.com.au\/south-australia-to-get-level-crossing-upgrades\/\">The madness has to stop<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe RTBU will be taking a package of measures to the summit in Brisbane tomorrow, and we will be seeking support from industry and all levels of government to take these measures forward.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr Kummerfeld said the RTBU\u2019s package included:<\/p>\n<p><strong>EDUCATION<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A comprehensive community awareness campaign to educate all motorists of the consequences of breaching level crossings safety laws \u2013 including legal penalties.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>ENFORCEMENT<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Increased penalties for motorists who disobey warning lights and signs at level crossings.<\/li>\n<li>Stiff penalties for trucking companies that employ drivers who disobey warning lights and signs at level crossings.<\/li>\n<li>Mandatory safety cameras at all level crossings to catch all motorists who break the law<\/li>\n<li>Highly visible signage at all level crossing warning motorists of heavy penalties for breaching level crossing safety laws<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>ELIMINATION<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Increased investment in engineering solutions, or \u2018active crossings\u2019, such as grade separations (overpasses), warning lights, bells and boom gates.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cThe rail industry has been talking about level crossing safety for years, but the tragedies keep happening,&#8221;
