{"id":17351,"date":"2024-03-04T18:37:03","date_gmt":"2024-03-04T08:37:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/?p=17351"},"modified":"2024-03-04T18:37:03","modified_gmt":"2024-03-04T08:37:03","slug":"amtrak-advances-major-rail-yard-upgrades-in-philadelphia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/?p=17351","title":{"rendered":"Amtrak advances major rail yard upgrades in Philadelphia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amtrak.com\/home.html\">Amtrak<\/a> has awarded a construction contract for the first of six major maintenance facilities around the country that will help modernise maintenance practices and ensure a successful transition from an aging fleet to modern, state-of-the-art trains.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Digging deeper<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.herzog.com\/\">Herzog Contracting Corporation<\/a> will design and construct a new Heavy Maintenance Facility at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amtrak.com\/home.html\">Amtrak\u2019s<\/a> Penn Coach Yard in Philadelphia.<\/p>\n<p>This facility will service many of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amtrak.com\/home.html\">Amtrak\u2019s<\/a> Acela and Northeast Regional trains that <br \/>\noperate up and down the Northeast Corridor (NEC), which today provides more than 12 <br \/>\nmillion annual trips and growing.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amtrak.com\/home.html\">Amtrak<\/a> Executive Vice President, Capital Delivery Laura Mason said: \u201cWe look forward to breaking ground in 2024 on this critical infrastructure investment along the NEC, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amtrak.com\/home.html\">America\u2019s<\/a> busiest passenger corridor. This new facility will speed up train maintenance and reduce turnaround times, providing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amtrak.com\/home.html\">Amtrak<\/a> customers with more reliable and frequent service.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>The big picture<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amtrak.com\/home.html\">Amtrak\u2019s<\/a> facility investments will prepare sites around the country for new trains that will begin serving customers in the coming years. In the immediate future:<\/p>\n<p>Six rail yards (five in the Northeast and one in the Pacific Northwest) will be upgraded<br \/>\nwith new facilities to support maintenance activities, routine inspections, equipment <br \/>\nrepairs and minor service and cleaning needs.<br \/>\nSeveral layover facilities outside the NEC will also be built or renovated. These are <br \/>\nlocated along existing routes where trains are cleaned, serviced or stored.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/railroads.dot.gov\/\">FRA<\/a> Administrator Amit Bose said: \u201cPresident Biden\u2019s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law is investing in nearly every aspect of passenger rail, including advancing projects of national significance, improving <br \/>\naccessibility at stations, funding workforce development, and upgrading facilities like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amtrak.com\/home.html\">Amtrak\u2019s<\/a> Penn Coach Yard in Philadelphia.
