{"id":171335,"date":"2025-01-30T14:52:54","date_gmt":"2025-01-30T04:52:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/?p=171335"},"modified":"2025-01-30T14:54:09","modified_gmt":"2025-01-30T04:54:09","slug":"melbournes-west-shows-folly-of-suburban-rail-loop","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/?p=171335","title":{"rendered":"Melbourne\u2019s west shows folly of Suburban Rail Loop"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Against expert advice, Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan chose to sign the contracts to build the first leg of the $200-plus billion Suburban Rail Loop (SRL) project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These experts warned that the SRL would be a $200-plus billion waste of money and wanted it axed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The enormous cost of the SRL will plunge Victoria deeper into debt, resulting in further credit rating downgrades and soaring interest costs.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"900\" height=\"575\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/image_2025-01-30_155043555.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-171336\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/image_2025-01-30_155043555.png 900w, https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/image_2025-01-30_155043555-300x192.png 300w, https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/image_2025-01-30_155043555-768x491.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>The project will also consume most of the state\u2019s infrastructure budget, starving existing transport corridors and growth areas of funding for decades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr Bob Birrell from the Australian Population Research Institute told&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.9news.com.au\/national\/rockbank-lost-and-forgotten-melbournes-west-needs-more-in-terms-of-infrastructure\/3f92042f-3a6f-4fe2-b825-ec4e9874d1cd\">9News<\/a>&nbsp;in August that the state government was deliberately starving Melbourne\u2019s fringe of infrastructure and diverting funding to big build projects like the SRL:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cThe government for decades has been trying to rest the spread of suburbia and has diverted funds from infrastructure like transport services in the fringe and instead diverting those funds to (big) projects like the Suburban Raik Loop, which is starving the fringe of funds\u201d.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cTheir priority is actually to slow development \u2013 and one way to do that is to starve those fringe areas of funds\u201d.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Age&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theage.com.au\/national\/victoria\/it-was-once-declared-unpopular-for-living-now-it-s-australia-s-fastest-growing-region-20241129-p5kulm.html\">reported<\/a>&nbsp;that Melbourne\u2019s west has absorbed far more population growth than any other area of the city, surging at twice the rate of the east since 2001.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"620\" height=\"567\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/image_2025-01-30_155057851.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-171337\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/image_2025-01-30_155057851.png 620w, https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/image_2025-01-30_155057851-300x274.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cI don\u2019t think people yet grasp just how big this region is and how rapidly it\u2019s growing\u201d<\/em>, says Peter Dawkins, who was vice chancellor of Victoria University, the west\u2019s only university, between 2011 and 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Melbourne\u2019s west is projected to expand at a rapid pace, with the&nbsp;Labor government heaping some of the state\u2019s highest housing targets on western municipalities over the coming decade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The number of homes in Melton is projected to grow by 190%, Maribyrnong by 114% and Wyndham by 110%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yet, these areas are already starved of infrastructure, which will only worsen as their populations explode.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Melton and Wyndham are still served by diesel trains. The City of Melton has one library for every 28,000 young people, compared to one for every 3000 in inner Melbourne.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the City of Wyndham, there is one aquatic centre for every 48,000 young people, compared to 5000 in inner Melbourne.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cIt\u2019s crazy.
