Collaborating closely with industry stakeholders, government bodies, and associations, GS1 leverages expertise and a global network to create customised, scalable solutions that address complex data exchange challenges.

A notable example of this collaboration is the groundbreaking Project i-Trace User Group, an initiative dedicated to advancing efficiencies and traceability within Australia’s rail industry.

Transforming Australia’s Rail Industry

Project i-Trace, launched in partnership with the Australian Rail Association (ARA), is a forward-thinking initiative aimed at enhancing the traceability of rail components and maintenance operations. Responding to the sector’s need for standardised identification across parts and assets, Project i-Trace improves efficiency, safety, and reliability while supporting the rail industry’s digitisation goals.

This strategic program unites rail operators, infrastructure managers, suppliers, and ARA representatives to drive the adoption of GS1 standards industry-wide, fostering collaboration through knowledge and experience sharing.

As Natalie Currey, General Manager, Supply Chain and Diversity at the ARA highlighted the benefit of the program.

“As an industry, we must move forward with this project as quickly as possible so its benefits can be fully realised – a productive, sustainable and competitive industry that minimises waste and duplication,” she said.

Building a Knowledge-Sharing Community

Established in 2015, the Project i-Trace User Group is a collective of experts from rail suppliers, operators, infrastructure managers, and industry associations, each committed to furthering GS1 standards in the sector. The group emphasises a strategic focus on “Learning from Each Other,” prompting initiatives like on-site experience tours, where members witness firsthand the practical application of GS1 standards in real-world settings.

The inaugural User Group site tour, hosted by Siemens at their Port Melbourne facility, offered participants an invaluable look at GS1 standards in action. During the visit, the group explored digital operational procedures, engaged in detailed discussions on implementation processes, and examined the tangible benefits of GS1 adoption, such as enhanced efficiency and unexpected gains along the way. User Group members will receive updates on tour dates in January 2025.

To become part of the Project i-Trace User Group and join future site tours, contact GS1.

The post Driving innovation in rail with Project i-Trace initiative appeared first on Rail Express.

Image/GS1

GS1 Australia is more than just a standards organisation; it is a global leader in data exchange solutions, enhancing collaboration …

The post Driving innovation in rail with Project i-Trace initiative appeared first on Rail Express.

[9737,10575,163
10376
post-171245","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-ara","category-industry-organisations","category-rail-industry-news-australia-new-zealand","tag-rail-express
["GET
