{"id":170542,"date":"2025-01-28T08:30:47","date_gmt":"2025-01-27T22:30:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/?p=170542"},"modified":"2025-01-28T08:31:33","modified_gmt":"2025-01-27T22:31:33","slug":"first-tap-and-go-public-transport-trials-in-victoria-labelled-gimmick-by-critics","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/?p=170542","title":{"rendered":"First tap-and-go public transport trials in Victoria labelled &#8216;gimmick&#8217; by critics"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The first trial of ticketless public transport in Victoria has been labelled a &#8220;gimmick&#8221; and &#8220;pointless&#8221; because it is limited to just four bus routes in the state&#8217;s north-east and doesn&#8217;t integrate with trains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Victoria is well behind other states and cities when it comes to ticketless travel,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2018-11-26\/sydney-trains-allow-bank-cards-to-tap-on\/10554506\">including Sydney<\/a>, where commuters can pay for trips via credit card or phone at the turnstiles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2023,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2023-05-21\/myki-public-transport-contract-victoria-conduent\/102372948\">US-French company Conduent won a $1.7 billion contract to take over myki<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As part of the deal, it must introduce tap-and-go payments \u2014 but already it has fallen behind schedule, with one of the key members of the consortium, Convergint, pulling out due to problems with the scheme&#8217;s development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It means Victorians will have to wait even longer for ticketless travel, with the state government refusing to say when commuters will be able travel without a ticket on the network.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\" id=\"104857630\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"862\" height=\"575\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/image-13.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-170544\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/image-13.png 862w, https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/image-13-300x200.png 300w, https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/image-13-768x512.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 862px) 100vw, 862px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The state government has not given a date for the full rollout of ticketless public transport travel.&nbsp;(ABC News: Patrick Rocca)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>&#8220;History is repeating itself and yet again we are seeing a very slow process to deliver essential upgrades to the ticketing system,&#8221; the Public Transport Users Association&#8217;s Daniel Bowen said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We are falling behind other cities.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A six-month trial of ticketless, full-fare travel is underway in the regional city of Wangaratta on four bus routes. But industry insiders who are unable to speak publicly said the trial was nothing more than a &#8220;gimmick&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;This really isn&#8217;t testing anything,&#8221; one said, noting that tap-and-go payment systems were already in widespread use in the community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The test has also been labelled &#8220;pointless&#8221; because it does not integrate with trains or trams, meaning Wangaratta locals catching the bus to the station still need a myki or other ticket to ride.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\" id=\"104859722\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"862\" height=\"575\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/image-14.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-170545\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/image-14.png 862w, https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/image-14-300x200.png 300w, https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/image-14-768x512.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 862px) 100vw, 862px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The initial trial is limited to four bus routes in Victoria&#8217;s north-east.&nbsp;&nbsp;(ABC News: Danielle Bonica)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>There is also criticism that the trial does not include concession prices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s not testing myki cards used throughout Victoria, it&#8217;s not testing integration with V\/Line which connects to those bus in Wangaratta, so it&#8217;s only really testing a tiny portion of what the myki system needs to provide. she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Maureen said she was unsure whether many seniors would use it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I could use it, some people may not, older people \u2014 but I could,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">&#8216;Sensible and simple thing to do&#8217;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The long-awaited modernisation of the Victoria&#8217;s public transport ticketing system has been under significant scrutiny in recent years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As reported by the ABC,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2023-05-21\/myki-public-transport-contract-victoria-conduent\/102372948\">the awarding of the contract to Conduent was met with some controversy<\/a>, with questions raised about its international track record in delivering tap-and go payments.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\" id=\"104857762\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"862\" height=\"575\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/image-17.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-170550\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/image-17.png 862w, https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/image-17-300x200.png 300w, https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/image-17-768x512.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 862px) 100vw, 862px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The update to Victoria&#8217;s public transport ticketing system has attracted some controversy.&nbsp;(ABC News: Danielle Bonica)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>The government was also slammed two years ago for rejecting a credit card tap-on technology trial for myki, after the ABC&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2023-07-06\/victorian-government-rejected-myki-credit-card-tap-on-trial\/102565286\">revealed documents showing a trial was ready to go<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Shadow Public Transport Minister Matthew Guy said it was unfathomable that Victoria was so far behind the rest of the country and the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s clear that the current state government have no interest in making this happen, which is bizarre, given it is just such a sensible and simple thing to do for the sake of Victorians&#8217; convenience,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He also lashed out at the government&#8217;s refusal to say when the system would be ready.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;If [Victorian Premier] Jacinta Allan and Ben Carroll can&#8217;t tell Victorians a simple answer, when will we get the chance to use our credit card or our phone as a ticket like they do in New South Wales?&#8221;
