{"id":170049,"date":"2025-01-26T19:48:25","date_gmt":"2025-01-26T09:48:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/?p=170049"},"modified":"2025-01-26T21:38:04","modified_gmt":"2025-01-26T11:38:04","slug":"wa-government-flags-plans-to-reverse-privatisation-of-freight-rail-network","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/?p=170049","title":{"rendered":"WA government flags plans to reverse privatisation of freight rail network"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The WA government has announced it will enter negotiations to reverse the privatisation of the state&#8217;s freight rail network.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, the Nationals WA have labelled the re-election promise &#8220;disingenuous&#8221; and &#8220;unrealistic&#8221;.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The freight rail network was sold off by the Richard Court government in 2000 under a 49-year lease, and is currently being operated by Arc Infrastructure.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But the tier-3 lines \u2014 which extend through much of the southern half of the state \u2014 &nbsp;have been left dormant since 2014, which has forced more trucks on the road to transport goods such as grain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Speaking on ABC Country Hour, Transport Minister Rita Saffioti said the government would attempt to reverse privatisation to allow trains to operate at full capacity.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;This is the start of the process \u2014 it&#8217;s not going to be easy I won&#8217;t shy away from that,&#8221; that was &#8220;announced at the very end of eight years of inaction&#8221; from state government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;[Minister Saffioti] has been completely focused on Metronet and ignored the needs of regional Western Australia,&#8221;
