THE Gateway Development Commission (GDC) has appointed a joint venture of three contractors to deliver its $US 16bn Hudson Tunnel project to connect New Jersey with New York City.<\/p>\n
Parsons, Mace and Arcadis will build the new twin-bore tunnel as part of the programme to upgrade the Northeast Corridor (NEC) between Washington DC and Boston<\/p>\n
The Hudson Tunnel Project will improve the NEC\u2019s capacity, reliability and resilience by constructing a new 4km twin-bore tunnel under the Hudson River. It is due to receive $US 6.9bn in funding from the Federal Transit Administration in 2024.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe delivery partners will be the arms and legs that enable GDC to continue to move this project in high gear as we prepare for heavy construction to start,\u201d GDC says.<\/p>\n
\u201cWith more major contract awards coming down the pike this year, getting the delivery partners onboard ensures we have the strongest and most agile team at the ready.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Hudson Tunnel Project comprises three parts:<\/p>\n
construction of a new, twin-bore Hudson River rail tunnel between the Bergen Palisades in New Jersey and Manhattan<\/p>\n
construction of a new track box underneath Hudson Yards in New York City, which \u00a0will allow trains to travel between the new Hudson River Tunnel and Penn Station, and<\/p>\n
comprehensive refurbishment of the 114-year-old North River Tunnel beneath the Hudson River, which suffers from age- and storm damage-related reliability issues.<\/p>\n
The Hudson Tunnel Project is part of the wider Gateway Programne, which aims to increase capacity on a 16km stretch of the NEC.<\/p>\n
