{"id":167684,"date":"2025-01-17T11:40:27","date_gmt":"2025-01-17T01:40:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/?p=167684"},"modified":"2025-01-17T11:40:28","modified_gmt":"2025-01-17T01:40:28","slug":"spacex-prototype-fails-in-space-after-launch-caused-string-of-qantas-delays","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/?p=167684","title":{"rendered":"SpaceX prototype fails in space after launch caused string of Qantas delays"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A SpaceX prototype has failed in space after its launch caused weeks of Qantas flight delays. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Starship had lifted off from the company&#8217;s Boca Chica, Texas launch facilities and separated from its Super Heavy booster minutes later to continue into space.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But minutes after launch, all communications were lost, cutting the test mission short.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here&#8217;s what to know about the mission failure and how the launch plans caused headaches for travellers in the southern hemisphere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How could a SpaceX launch affect Qantas flights?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Qantas says it was forced to delay several of its flights to South Africa at the last minute&nbsp;<strong>due to warnings of falling debris<\/strong>&nbsp;from when the rocket was expected to re-enter Earth&#8217;s atmosphere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But SpaceX had delayed its launch window multiple times, contributing to Qantas&#8217;s string of delays, which could last up to six hours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>SpaceX chose the area above the Southern Indian Ocean as a&nbsp;<strong>re-entry point due to its remoteness.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That happens to be&nbsp;<strong>directly in Qantas&#8217; flight path between Sydney and Johannesburg.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\" id=\"104825992\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"862\" height=\"575\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/12a51219436bb2acb5edf48ece13612b.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-167686\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/12a51219436bb2acb5edf48ece13612b.jpeg 862w, https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/12a51219436bb2acb5edf48ece13612b-300x200.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/12a51219436bb2acb5edf48ece13612b-768x512.jpeg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 862px) 100vw, 862px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">A changing SpaceX launch schedule has had knock-on effects for Qantas flights.&nbsp;&nbsp;(AAP: Dan Himbrechts)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Ben Holland, the head of Qantas&#8217;s Operations Centre, said the company often gets little notice about when the space company is testing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8220;While we try to make any changes to our schedule in advance, the timing of recent launches have moved around at late notice, which has meant we&#8217;ve had to delay some flights just prior to departure. Our teams notify customers of changes to their flight as soon as we know it will be impacted,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Customers generally understand this is outside of airlines&#8217; control and that we can&#8217;t fly in the area when the rocket re-entry is taking place.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">So why was the rocket launch delayed?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The launch window for the 122-metre Starship has been&nbsp;<strong>delayed multiple times<\/strong>&nbsp;in recent days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was last scheduled for January 15 but the company said in a post to X it had to delay the launch&nbsp;<strong>due to weather.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Brownsville has recorded a run of wet, windy and foggy weather in the past week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Friday, January 10, the company ran a launch rehearsal to simulate most steps of the scheduled launch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While SpaceX did not give a reason for previous delays, it&#8217;s possible one may have been an outcome of findings from the rehearsal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Is this a one-off?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr Holland says&nbsp;<strong>Qantas is hoping to work with SpaceX<\/strong>&nbsp;to lower the impact of launches in the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re in contact with SpaceX to see if they can refine the areas and time windows for the rocket re-entries to minimise future disruption to our passengers on the route.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It comes as SpaceX makes&nbsp;<strong>plans to increase the annual cap on its Starship launches from five to 25.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The company has requested approval from the Federal Aviation Administration, which is expected to rule on the proposal after a public comment period ends in late January.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\" id=\"104825942\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"862\" height=\"575\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/35c19c55d890be632352e9832083f3d6.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-167685\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/35c19c55d890be632352e9832083f3d6.jpeg 862w, https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/35c19c55d890be632352e9832083f3d6-300x200.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/35c19c55d890be632352e9832083f3d6-768x512.jpeg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 862px) 100vw, 862px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Qantas began swapping out 787-9 Dreamliners for A380s on the service last year.&nbsp;&nbsp;(AAP: Darren England)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Just last year, Qantas began to replace the 787-9 Dreamliners it uses for the route with A380s, which would nearly double its passenger capacity on the route.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Aviation Australia quoted Qantas as saying there was &#8220;strong demand&#8221; among passengers for South Africa services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What exactly was SpaceX testing?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>SpaceX&#8217;s Starship rocket had made six test landings in the Indian Ocean in the past.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The company said its seventh launch would test &#8220;new generation ship with significant upgrades, attempt Starship&#8217;s first payload deployment test, fly multiple re-entry experiments geared towards ship catch and reuse, and launch and return the Super Heavy booster&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Starship&#8217;s debut flight was in April 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What do we know about the prototype failure?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The prototype failed in space minutes after launch, cutting short a test mission that was to include a debut attempt to deploy satellites.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Starship&#8217;s upper stage, which was two metres taller than previous versions, separated from its Super Heavy Booster nearly four minutes into the flight as planned.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But minutes later, SpaceX communications manager Dan Huot reported on a live stream that mission teams had lost contact with the ship.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We did lose all communications with the ship \u2014 that is essentially telling us we had an anomaly with the upper stage,&#8221;
