completed its biggest trial yet, with trains running a further 35,000 kilometers and taking more than 2,600 trips across 10 days, as the project powers towards opening later this year \u2013 one year ahead of schedule.\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><span id=\"more-118348\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"text-align-justify\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Acting Premier Ben Carroll and Acting Minister for Transport Infrastructure Melissa Horne visited <a href=\"https:\/\/www.railexpress.com.au\/metro-tunnel-stations-one-step-closer\/\">Anzac Station<\/a> to announce that crews have completed 160 hours of \u2018dress rehearsal\u2019 works, as part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/bigbuild.vic.gov.au\/projects\/metro-tunnel\">project<\/a>\u2019s trial operations phase.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"text-align-justify\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Trains travelled between Hawksburn and West Footscray through the new tunnels along the Sunbury and Cranbourne\/Pakenham lines at a frequency between eight and 12 per hour.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"text-align-justify\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">The frequency is expected to increase in the coming months as operators refine the new technology inside the tunnels and stations.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"text-align-justify\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u201cOur test trains have travelled further than the distance to London and back in 10 days, passing their biggest test yet before the project opens this year \u2013 one year ahead of schedule,\u201d Carroll said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"text-align-justify\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u201cWhile the Liberals rejected this project and said it would be disastrous for Melbourne, we\u2019re getting on with delivering it \u2013 we build, they block.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"text-align-justify\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">The 10-day blitz of operations were an opportunity for Metro Trains staff to become more familiar with the project, with another 46 train drivers trained to operate the new High Capacity Metro Trains \u2013 taking the total number of trained drivers to around 200.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"text-align-justify\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Trial operations will continue throughout the year as the team runs through more than 100 \u2018real life scenario\u2019 exercises to ensure the project\u2019s complex systems and technology are ready for passengers later this year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"text-align-justify\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">This will range from manual opening and closing of the platform screen doors in the event of a failure, to intruder detection and mass station and train evacuation exercises.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"text-align-justify\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Acting Minister for Transport Infrastructure Melissa Horne said thousands of Victorians will use this tunnel every day and the government is powering ahead, training staff and testing advanced technology that has never been used on the rail network before.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"text-align-justify\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Crews are also making progress to complete construction on the remaining two stations, Town Hall and State Library, which sit directly underneath Melbourne\u2019s CBD.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"text-align-justify\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">The Metro Tunnel is the biggest upgrade of Melbourne\u2019s train network since 1981 \u2013 freeing up capacity on the City Loop to deliver more trains more often and better connecting Victorians to jobs, health and education.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The post <a
