{"id":16556,"date":"2024-03-01T15:37:00","date_gmt":"2024-03-01T05:37:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/?p=16556"},"modified":"2024-03-01T15:37:00","modified_gmt":"2024-03-01T05:37:00","slug":"allrail-react-to-danske-statsbaner-dsbs-profit-announcement","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/?p=16556","title":{"rendered":"ALLRAIL react to Danske Statsbaner (DSB)\u2019s profit announcement"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.allrail.eu\/\">ALLRAIL<\/a> has released this statement:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>This month, Danish state-owned passenger rail operator <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dsb.dk\/en\/about-dsb\/\">Danske Statsbaner (\u2018DSB\u2019)<\/a> reported increased \u201cprofits\u201d and ridership for the fiscal year 2023.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>However, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dsb.dk\/en\/about-dsb\/\">DSB\u2019s<\/a> \u201cprofits\u201d are in fact a fake profit margin that is \u2018earned\u2019 from a countrywide Public Service Obligation (\u2018PSO\u2019) contract that was directly awarded by the Danish government without the benefits of a competitive tender (which would have achieved a lower cost for taxpayers and higher quality for passengers).<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Instead, there is a much better option: rail market opening in Denmark.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>In essence, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dsb.dk\/en\/about-dsb\/\">DSB\u2019s<\/a> profits do not come from being a competitive business; instead, they are baked into an exclusive deal negotiated with its owner, the government, and subsidised by the taxpayer \u2013 at an astonishing \u201c3.25 billion Danish Kroner per year\u201d.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>But is there really a need for a huge subsidised PSO contract \u2013 for all of Denmark? On the contrary: there are multiple indications that many routes could already be commercially viable; for example:\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Demand is strong with up to \u201c49% more travellers\u201d on specific routes compared to 2019 \u2013 the last year before Covid \u2013 and the\u00a0growing willingness by Danes to use rail travel<\/em><br \/>\n<em>There are independent operators who have applied to offer commercial services within Denmark \u2013 without any taxpayer subsidy\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.allrail.eu\/\">ALLRAIL\u2019s<\/a> Policy Officer Salim Benkirane says: \u201cIn reality, the only profit-earning that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dsb.dk\/en\/about-dsb\/\">DSB<\/a> knows is lobbying its owner for exclusive taxpayer funded contracts.
