for Western Sydney"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>After five years of construction, testing and delays, Parramatta&#8217;s light rail is ready for operation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The NSW government said the light rail would be open from 5am on Friday, December 20.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Minister for Transport Jo Haylen said it would be a &#8220;historic moment&#8221; for the people of Western Sydney.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I want to thank everyone for their patience while a significant amount of testing has been completed to get light rail ready for passengers,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We can&#8217;t wait to welcome passengers onboard.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Doors will open on the new L4 Westmead and Carlingford Line, taking passengers through the heart of Parramatta&#8217;s CBD, with the first passenger services departing Carlingford and Westmead light rail stops at 5am and Parramatta Square at 5:02am.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\" id=\"104743626\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"862\" height=\"575\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/image-29.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-159480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/image-29.png 862w, https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/image-29-300x200.png 300w, https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/image-29-768x512.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 862px) 100vw, 862px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Doors will open on the new L4 Westmead and Carlingford Line on Friday morning.&nbsp;(ABC News: Declan Bowring)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>The announcement came after the Office of the National Safety Regulator signed off on its opening to passengers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Parramatta Light Rail has received accreditation from the Office of the National Rail Safety Regulator to carry passengers,&#8221; a Transport for NSW spokesperson said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A &#8216;frustrating&#8217; project<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Completion of stage one of the project, which cost more than $2.875 billion, has been a long time coming.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Earlier in December the NSW government said the opening of the light rail would be pushed back to next year, after an electrical wire fell onto a tram and revealed equipment defects across the network.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An audit then found about half of the fastening joints used along the network were faulty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other issues found during the testing process included braking problems and a risk of collision on a shared section of track.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More than 800 tests were completed during the final stage of testing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ms Haylen had described the delays as &#8220;frustrating&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;ve had some real challenges on that project,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Trams are quiet and do not stop easily. They can&#8217;t swerve out of the way, so please be on the lookout for light rail when in the area.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Stage one of the light rail connects Sydney&#8217;s north-west to its west via Parramatta&#8217;s CBD.
