It&#8217;s now no more than $10.60 on weekdays.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Back then, a one-way trip was 56 minutes. It&#8217;s now closer to 90.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And overcrowding is now common, an issue brought into sharp focus for Professor Waller a few months ago.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\" id=\"104681860\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"862\" height=\"575\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/image-4.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-154910\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/image-4.png 862w, https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/image-4-300x200.png 300w, https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/image-4-768x512.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 862px) 100vw, 862px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">A record 23.8 million trips were taken on V\/Line services in the year ending June 30, 2024.&nbsp;(ABC Ballarat: Alexander Darling)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>&#8220;There were two young neurodiverse people on the train, and [they had] anxiety \u2026 over how they would actually negotiate their way to their door,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;They kind of found each other in the crowd, and people helped them get to the door.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;They&#8217;d been pushed to the middle of the carriage, and they were basically panicking about how they would make their way back to the door \u2014 it was packed so solid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;So people around them, myself included, had to calm them down \u2026 that was really distressing to see.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Sunday, new timetables came into effect for five regional Victorian lines, aimed at addressing how busy they had become.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But Professor Waller thinks infrastructure upgrades are the answer to the overcrowding problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And she&#8217;s not alone.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\" id=\"104677528\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"862\" height=\"575\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/image-3.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-154909\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/image-3.png 862w, https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/image-3-300x200.png 300w, https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/image-3-768x512.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 862px) 100vw, 862px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Daniel Bowen shared this photo of his trip from Melbourne to Ballarat on Saturday, November 17.&nbsp;(Supplied: Daniel Bowen)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Expanding city<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Daniel Bowen, spokesperson for Victoria&#8217;s Public Transport Users Association, is also familiar with overcrowding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He recently took a train to Ballarat that had three carriages instead of six, and noticed people having to stand or sit on the floor on their bags due to the crowding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Let us not forget the recent and somewhat annoying management of rolling stock at V\/Line. Many have been reporting across the internet and social media on how V\/Line have been replacing longer distance comfortable rolling stock with Vlocity trains not designed for such distances and these have been on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/?p=149525\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Swan Hill line and more information on Sunday 17\/11\/24\">Swan Hill<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/?p=116816\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Riding the upgraded Warrnambool Line on 29th August 2024\">Warrnambool<\/a> Lines.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s great to see more people on trains, but V\/Line and the government need to keep a very close eye on that and deliver capacity upgrades to make sure the system can cope,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This year Victoria has been rolling out VLocity trains to replace its five-carriage locomotive-hauled V\/Line services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite assurances from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/?p=125943\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"V\/Line reduces seating capacity on Warrnambool line with Vlocity services\">Local Member for Warrnambool there would be no loss of seat numbers<\/a> this has not been the case.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\" id=\"104681824\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"862\" height=\"575\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/image-2.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-154908\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/image-2.png 862w, https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/image-2-300x200.png 300w, https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/image-2-768x512.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 862px) 100vw, 862px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">V\/Line has been rolling out three-carriage VLocity trains on the Warrnambool line.&nbsp;(ABC South West Vic: Jean Bell)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>On the Warrnambool line, these trains have been only three-carriages long due to the station platforms not being long enough for six-carriage services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The three-carriage services have 222 seats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Why have the Vlocity sets not designed for the longer distance journeys been introduced onto the Warrnambool services when the platforms are not long enough and there are not enough seats.  The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/?p=142689\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Warrnambool \u2013 V\/Line to trash your long distance rail service\">introduction of the Vlocity cars has reduced the standard of services on the Warrnambool<\/a> Rail Line. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr Bowen said while the timetabling changes on the Geelong and Warrnambool lines would help address overcrowding, platform upgrades were also needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>It is hard to see how this is true considering the number of seats has been reduced on the route.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Patronage will continue to grow,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;In the shorter term they could look at running additional services, and we understand that&#8217;s what the plan is for some of the V\/Line network, but where there are limitations and they can only run three-carriage trains they really should be looking at station upgrades.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>We shift the problem to platforms now and have not delayed any change to rolling stock until there fundamental changes to infrastructure have been finalised.  Could you get more stupid?<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"730\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Screenshot-2024-12-05-at-9.11.32\u202fAM-1-1024x730.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-154906\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Screenshot-2024-12-05-at-9.11.32\u202fAM-1-1024x730.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Screenshot-2024-12-05-at-9.11.32\u202fAM-1-300x214.png 300w, https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Screenshot-2024-12-05-at-9.11.32\u202fAM-1-768x548.png 768w, https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Screenshot-2024-12-05-at-9.11.32\u202fAM-1.png 1178w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>There are currently 22 train stations in regional Victoria with platforms shorter than 159 metres \u2014 the length needed to accommodate six-carriage VLocity trains.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These include Warrnambool, Camperdown, Drouin, Malmsbury and Heathcote Junction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Two key stations on the warrnambool line cannot use vlocity trains why are they on that line?<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>A total of 23.8 million trips were taken on the V\/Line network in the year ending June 30, a record.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Long-term plans<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In a statement, a Department of Transport spokesperson said it was continuing to invest in the regional rail network.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The $650 million Melton Line Upgrade is expected to be completed in 2028 and will enable the rollout of nine-carriage VLocity trains, increasing capacity on the line by 50 per cent,&#8221; they said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Can someone explain how this will fix overcrowding and timetable issues please?<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Level crossing removal and station works on the Melton line project are underway as of this week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The department spokesperson said more than 70,000 sleepers were upgraded on the Warrnambool line ahead of the VLocity trains being introduced, and that further upgrades would be considered in the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>And how again does this address the issues?<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Planning is also underway for trains to run every 40 minutes on the Ballarat line to Wendouree<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>between 8am\u20139pm on weekends.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\" id=\"104683894\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"862\" height=\"575\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/image-1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-154907\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/image-1.png 862w, https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/image-1-300x200.png 300w, https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/image-1-768x512.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 862px) 100vw, 862px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Many people rely on train travel for work and medical appointments.&nbsp;(ABC Ballarat: Alexander Darling)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>The spokesperson said more than 97 per cent of V\/Line&#8217;s services ran as scheduled in the past year and the department had also completed a new train washing facility in Bendigo and was upgrading its Footscray Maintenance Facility to improve performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ultimately, commuters like Professor Waller said they hoped the state could be more ambitious with its upgrade schedule.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;More trains and bigger trains on the weekends will make everybody&#8217;s life better, and obviously V\/Line&#8217;s only got the infrastructure they&#8217;ve got \u2014 they&#8217;ve been building sidings where they can do more passing of trains,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;But until we have electrification out to Melton or arguably Bacchus Marsh and the line is duplicated all the way, I think what they can do with the timetable is really limited.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Someone else thinks electrification to Melton is a waste of time and it should be further.
